A glacial collapse triggered flash floods Wednesday that swept away entire communities on the Nepal-Tibet border and buried people and homes in mud. As of yesterday, at least 270 have died in Nepal and three in China. More than 1,500 are still missing. According to missionaries with contacts in that area, 12 or more pastors have lost their lives.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by washed-away roads. But Christians with a heart for that area are doing what they can to bring help.
Many of those missing are Hindus on a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar. Because this is a popular tourist spot, other foreign nationals have also been affected. On the Tibet side, Chinese officials say at least 558 people have not yet been located, including 260 from other countries; while Nepal authorities report some 644 foreign tourists missing, including 178 from India, 65 from the US, 35 from Australia, 33 from the UK and 25 from Canada.
Lord, please comfort those who mourn, heal those who are wounded and protect and rescue those who are trapped. As they wait, meet them in powerful ways, provide for their needs like only You can, and draw them to Yourself. When they cry out to You, answer them. Give them dreams and visions of Jesus showing them the way to salvation. Give Hindus, Buddhists and others who do not yet know You a deep hunger for Truth and the courage to lay aside their false gods to seek the One True God. Open the way for loving Christians to go into that area, providing shelter and humanitarian aid to those in need. Surround them with Your Shield of protection and give them favor with all people. Empower them by Your Spirit to speak the good news of Your love in a way each person can understand. Miraculously multiply provisions so Christians can abundantly share with those in need. In the midst of this terrible tragedy, birth a great awakening. Unveil the eyes of those who have been blinded to Your Truth, give them a longing for Your love, open their ears to hear Your message of grace, and save them. For the glory of Your name, Jesus. Amen.
