On July 23, militants attacked the town of Dabbi in the Nuba Mountain region of South Kordofan, Sudan, and shot Pastor Adel Idris Jongool, who died of his wounds a few days later. (Voice of the Martyrs Canada, August 13)
Just a few weeks earlier, rebels barged into Father Youhana Al-Amin’s Catholic church in Kauda, demanding medical supplies, and then killed him.
Also on July 23, at least ten people were massacred in Heiban and 20 others abducted, including many children. Pastor Yaqob Ibrahim Tia, his two sons, a brother and a nephew were among those kidnapped. On July 28, they were released. Then on July 31, Pastor Zakaria Suliman Jana was taken in Heiban, but released the following day.
Sudan is 92% Muslim and ranks #4 among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, who are a main target for Islamic extremists on all sides of the war.
An estimated 150,000 to over 400,000 people have died in Sudan since the civil war began in April 2023 between Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Out of the 51 million who remain, more than 19.5 million face acute food insecurity in the midst of ongoing famine. (UN, August 24)
About 12-14 million people are homeless due to widespread atrocities, including mass killings, sexual violence, child recruitment for soldiers, attacks on hospitals and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure. Severe seasonal floods have worsened the crisis, destroying thousands of homes and temporary shelters and leaving families with no shelter at all.
Lord, we praise You for the safe release of those who were taken. Please comfort their families and others mourning the loss of loved ones. Bring healing to every heart, mind and body. Fill them with Your peace, and empower them with the courage and love to forgive their enemies. Let them experience Your comfort and grace in deep ways. Please, Father God, be a Shield of protection around all Christians in Sudan and South Sudan. Keep them from abduction, murder, rape and other harm, and grow them strong in You. For every Christian who is persecuted, bring thousands of Muslims to faith. For every church that is attacked, birth another 500 churches, until there are believers in every town and community all throughout Sudan and South Sudan, and praises to You rise up from every corner. Provide for the needs of every Christian so abundantly, they will also abundantly share with others in need and along with it, Your good news for their salvation.
Father God, please stop the violence. Bring to justice those who rape, torture and kill. Replace lies with Truth, hatred with a desire for Love so strong extremists will lay down their weapons, repent and seek Your salvation. Give all Muslims a craving for a better way, for salvation, for a God who loves, heals and restores, for a nation that blesses its people not wars against itself. Make a way for the Bible to be translated into the languages of every one of Sudan’s 131 unreached people groups and made available to every person. Meet Muslims in their dreams and give them visions of You. Open their hearts to Truth and give them courage to lay down their traditions to follow Christ. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are. Open the way for all the more Christians to bring healing and provide other aid, sharing Your good news with those in need. Make Your people a beacon of light in the midst of so much darkness, shining the way to salvation and eternal life, and showing the lost abundant love, joy and peace that can be ours in Christ, even in such tragedy. For those who have witnessed and endured terrible torture and abuse, please heal their hearts and minds. Be merciful to them, O Father. Set them free from nightmares, panic and fear. Plant deep within them faith, hope and love so fierce, fear must flee. Topple every lie with Your truth and save the lost by the thousands. Multiply Your church and awaken every mind and heart to You. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
