47 Killed, 50 Abducted in Haiti

Armed attackers massacred at least 47 people, including five children, and abducted 50 or more others in the community of Kenscoff, near Haiti’s capital, on Monday. (Pierre-Richard Lusaka, Dánica Coto and Evans Sanon, AP, August 25)

Izo or Johnson André, one of Haiti’s most notorious gang leaders, threatened Haiti’s director of National Police, saying that if any of the militants were hurt they would kill all the hostages.

Gangs control about 70% of Port-au-Prince, as well as much land in central Haiti and surrounding areas. Violence has displaced about 1.5 million people. Since January, more than 3,050 people have been killed; while from April to June nearly 800 rapes were reported and 81 kidnappings. But reported cases such as those only represent a fraction of the totals, as many people hope for a quicker release if they don’t report their loved ones’ abduction.

Gangs also often target Christian charities and orphanage workers for murder and abduction:

Missionaries Killed in Haiti

Gangs shot and killed three missionaries in Haiti Thursday night just as Haitians began to…

Lord, please comfort those who mourn and be a Shield around those who have been abducted. Please especially be with any children who are held hostage. Hold back the enemy and care for each victim’s needs. Protect them from harm and fight for them. Reveal to rescuers the location where the hostages are being held, and make a way for their safe escape and the downfall of this gang. If Christians are in the same location as these hostages, open up ways for believers to impart encouragement and share Your Good News with captives who do not yet know You. Open up the hearts of the lost to hunger for You and be saved. Fight for the hostages’ freedom. Rise up and show Yourself strong. Haunt Izo’s and all the gang members” dreams. Take over their thoughts throughout the day. Grip them with such fear of the Lord and conviction of sin they will drop their greed and weapons, surrender to You and be saved. Bring forth a great awakening in Haiti with thousands coming to faith and churches rising up from the ashes of so much violence and pain, bringing New Life to every heart in the nation. May their hearts beat for You, O Living God. Rescue them, save them, put an end to the violence, and raise up leaders who will crush evil and bless the people of Haiti. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
