A glacial collapse triggered flash floods at the end of August that swept away entire communities on the Nepal-Tibet border and killed more than 1,118, with nearly 4,000 people still missing, 590 of those from 39 other countries.
According to missionaries with contacts in the area, 12 or more pastors have lost their lives. Believers in Timure said two of six churches swept away. Initial reports from relief workers showed at least 125 believers dead, although many others are still missing.
Christian agencies like Send Relief and Samaritan’s Purse are working with local believers and churches in Nepal to distribute food and other provisions to those in need.
Following is a preliminary report from district leaders on the churches in Rasuwa and Nuwakot that has been circulating on Facebook:
- Syabrubesi Church, Rasuwa – Pastor Lakpa Tamang – 3 believers missing
- Punarutthan Church, Rasuwa – Pastor Dipak Bartal – church and members affected
- Punarutthan Church, Nuwakot – Pastor missing – church damaged
- Mailung Church, Rasuwa – Pastor Dil Bahadur Tamang – church damaged – about 50 believers missing
- Santi Bazar, Nuwakot – about 30 believers died
- Timure Church, Rasuwa – many believers died – the pastor may be the only one alive
- Tukche Anugrah Church, Nuwakot – Pastor Dipak Yonjan – four believers missing.
- Dakhbari Church, Rasuwa – Pastor Kumar Gurung – 17 people missing
- Grace Church, Nuwakot – three believers missing
- St. Petra Church, Nuwakot – four believers missing
- Naw Jyoti Baptist Church, Nuwakot – Pastor Tirtha Giri – church partially damaged
Lord, please give wisdom to rescuers and lead them to those who are stranded or still missing. Do it in a way all will know You are the One who did that. Give every lost person caught up in this tragedy such a hunger for You they will lay down their false gods to worship You alone. Be a Shield around every Christian, whether survivors or relief workers. Comfort those who mourn, heal those who are wounded, provide for every need in such abundant, even miraculous ways the lost will ask questions about You and be drawn into Your love. Empower every believer with Your words to effectively communicate the message of Your salvation to those who do not yet know You. Give them strength and courage as they seek to help and encourage others. Open the way for pastors and strong believers to freely preach Your good news, and draw many thousands into Your Kingdom. Use this terrible tragedy, Lord, to bring forth a great awakening in Nepal. Life where there has been death. Hope for the hopeless. Healing for the broken. Strength for the weak. Open wide the doors for the good news to be preached to every person, and Bibles to be made available in every language. Give Christians favor with authorities, and rebuild every life on the Solid Rock of Christ.
