A Russian missile killed a beloved Christian family in Radushne on the outskirts of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine on July 30.
While the Voronovs were sleeping, more than 70 missiles and 280 drones were launched at the small community, exploding their home instantly. Family members present were parents Artem and Olena, an 18-month-old grandson Artem, and seven of their ten children: Mark, 17, Azariah Ilay, 11, Emilia, 6, Dominika, 15, Viorika, 14, Zakhar, 12, and Federica, 10.
Artem’s father Danylo, who serves in a the Ukrainian military, was away with his wife at the time of the attack. “I lost everyone: my parents, sisters, brothers and son,” he said. (Bello Agnello, International Christian Concern, Persecution.org, August 7)
The Volonovs are remembered by beloved friends, relatives and neighbors in their community for the way they lived out their faith and for the laughter of children that constantly filled their home.
“In the village,” one neighbor said, “they were known as an exemplary family who showed others how to be friends and how to love and support one another.”
A report published earlier this year said that at least 737 religious buildings have been destroyed since the beginning of the war in 2022. About 450 of those were Baptist churches. Because Baptists only represent 1-2% of Ukraine’s population, the data suggests they are being specifically targeted by Russian forces. (ICC, March 6)
The Orthodox Church has also faced pressure. Priest Serhii Mykhalchuk said he was repeatedly harassed by Russian authorities. His parish was evicted from its cathedral in Simferopol, and the property was seized.
In other cases, Russian troops invaded Orthodox churches to humiliate and intimidate. One priest was beaten and forced to parade naked through the streets, while soldiers mocked, “Where is your God now?”
Lord, please have mercy. Be a Shield around Christians in Ukraine and those held hostage by Russia. Keep them from harm, and use them as light in the darkness. Comfort those mourning the loss of this beautiful family, and other Christians throughout Ukraine and the world mourning loved ones who have died in the war. Heal the wounded. Gather churches together to worship even in the midst of much pain. Bring forth such amazing revival that neighbors all around, and even the enemy, will see Your love, long for You, and switch sides to follow You. Bless every Christian so abundantly they will share provisions, shelter and the gospel with their lost neighbors. Please bring a quick and right end to this war. Peace, Lord. We ask for peace. Stop Putin and this hateful war, and set Ukraine free to LIVE and worship You. We speak LIFE over Ukraine now. HOPE and PEACE. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
