Syria: #6 Most Dangerous Nation for Christians 2026

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Last year, Syria ranked #18 on the World Watchlist’s most dangerous countries for Christians, but a spike in violence has boosted the 90% Muslim nation up to #6 now.

Shortly before Easter, a mob of Muslim extremists from Al-Qalaa (Qalaat al-Madiq) in Hama province attacked Christians in neighboring Al-Suqaylabiyah village. This month, they attacked yet again, shooting at houses and even an Orthodox priest, who escaped unharmed, praise God. (Read more here.)

“The situation in Syria for Christians has grown more dire in the last year,” writes Open Doors. “Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024 – after ruling Syria for more than 50 years – the country has been mostly controlled by forces led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This is an Islamic extremist group with roots in Al Qaeda. The group has made overtures towards moderation and held talks with representatives of Syria’s traditional Christian communities, but it is too soon to know what will come of the new leadership.

“Since the regime change, widespread instability has led to deadly clashes that have affected other religious minorities, particularly Druze and Alawites, with Christians caught in the crossfire. The resurgence of military operations by the Islamic State group since October 2024 reinforces a sense of insecurity. These include a deadly attack on a church in Damascus in June 2025.

• “In the aftermath of the fall of the Assad regime, many Christians live with constant uncertainty. Pray that believers would lean on God as their ‘Rock eternal’ (Isaiah 26:4).
• “Pray for converts from Islam, that they would find love and fellowship even when they encounter rejection by family and friends.
• “Pray for the victims of the Damascus church attack, that their wounds would be healed, and they would feel God’s closeness as they decide how best to live out their faith.”

Lord, please shield every Christian in Syria from harm and persecution. Young Christians are especially vulnerable to abduction, and still so many others have been displaced from their homes due to continuing violence. Please provide for all their needs, and comfort them in every loss. Hold them in Your strong arms, increase their faith, deepen their love, remind them of Your truth to counter every lie from the enemy, and empower them to speak Your Good News to those around them in a way that is easy to understand. Hide believers from those who seek to harm them, and get them to safety quickly, Lord. Rescue the children. Provide loving homes for the orphans. Use the church as a place of shelter and peace in the midst of chaos and war. Give every Syrian a hunger for You. When they feel afraid and cry out to You, answer them, O God. Make Christians a safe place for those who need help, and then touch the hearts of the lost with Your love through them. Be loud and clear and miraculous as You pursue those who are persecuting Your church. Overwhelm them with Your love and mercy. Penetrate their thoughts and dreams. Halt their movements whenever they lift a weapon against a Christian. Call them to Yourself, O God, to lay down violence, evil, destruction, and death; and choose mercy, Truth, Love, and Life instead.
