One morning, the Lord awakened me to the song Endless Alleluia, and a vision of idols toppling to the ground on their faces.
He spoke to me about how we, His people, too often try to “fix” our sin problem somehow on our own, as if our willpower is strong enough.
It’s not, of course. You and I know. We’ve tried that before. It doesn’t work.
We just end up bowing to that idol again and again.
It’s a worship problem.
Where is your focus? What consumes your thoughts?
What are you bowing to?
Look up. Open your heart wide. Fully receive the breadth and width and height of God’s unending love and grace. Understand how serious your sin is, that it took Jesus dying on the cross a horrible death in your place to make it possible for you to be right with Holy God.
And love Him back. With all your heart, mind, soul, and body.
Only He is the Worthy One, the Holy One, the only One Mighty to Save you from that sin. Fix your eyes on Him.
Only He can topple your idols.
You’ve spent enough time on those thoughts, chasing after or giving into that sin. It’s time to shift gears and step into the holy presence of the only One who can set you free.
Find a quiet place. Get on your face before Him. Lay those idols down.
And worship Him alone.
Lord, set us free from a religious spirit that makes us feel we’re better than others. Show us our idols. Far too long have we bowed to our own egos, to fear, selfishness, anger, self-defense, lust, greed, food, and so much more — so long, in fact, that we’ve stopped seeing our sinful mindsets as idolatry, and have settled into a lifestyle. Father, we confess we are weak and easily distracted from Your goodness and glory. We need You. Our willpower is not enough to break free from our strongholds. Light our hearts aflame with passion for You so fervent that we leave our prisons behind and follow You out of our darkness into the Light of Your felt presence. Topple our idols. Destroy our strongholds and self-centered mindsets. Set us free, Master and Redeemer, for only then will we be free indeed. Let us worship You alone, Almighty God, and bring You alone our highest praise.
