World Cup matches begin tomorrow, June 11. Let’s pray for Christian athletes, missionaries and others traveling to cities where World Cup matches are held, that God will empower them to share His love in ways people can easily understand. Pray He will give the lost a hunger to know Him. Pray especially for athletes and coaches from closed nations where missionaries are not allowed, that God will open the way for them to hear the good news about Jesus and be saved.
Lord, please be a Shield around every Christian athlete on teams competing in the World Cup, and protect them from sickness and harm. Heal any wounds, strains or other impairments. Empower them with endurance and strength physically, spiritually and emotionally. Fix their eyes on You as their Prize. Hebrews 12:1-3. Give them boldness and Your Spirit’s empowering to share with the lost around them. Shine through their good sportsmanship, kindness toward opponents, endurance, strength and ability; for You have promised they can do “all things through Christ who strengthens” them. Whenever they are interviewed by the press or otherwise on camera, let the whole world see the difference You make in their lives. Move reporters to ask them questions that will open the door for them to testify of Your goodness and salvation. Shine Your love, peace and joy through them in such powerful ways everyone who sees them will be drawn to Your Light in them, and hunger to know You. Bring to them athletes from Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and Communist countries where the gospel is not allowed to be preached, and open up the doors for them to share Your good news in a way they can easily understand. Even where speaking with each other during competitions is not allowed or encouraged, make a way for friendships to start that can continue even beyond the Olympics. Raise up from among Christian athletes those who will feel Your call to share the good news in other nations, carrying Your “torch” and setting hearts afire with Your love. Yes, Lord, awaken every nation to Your truth and salvation.
Whether athletes, coaches, support staff, spectators, believers there specifically to evangelize, or even those of us watching from home, empower us with Your Holy Spirit to bring You glory in all we say and do. May Your love, peace and joy be evident in our lives to everyone around us and to the millions of lost people watching all around the world. Plant Your Good News in every place people gather, both on site and in family and other gatherings throughout the world. Give the lost a hunger for You so fierce, they will listen up when Your name is spoken and the seeds will go deep in their hearts. Then show them where to find You in their city or where to look on the internet. Bring Christians to them to show them Your love in very real ways and share Your plan of salvation. Awaken every nation to Your love, O God. May Your path to salvation be clear and near to every person. Tear down the walls that have kept so much of the world from knowing You, and bust through the darkness with Your binding Light, breaking every stronghold and binding us in oneness to the One this life is for. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
