Cuba is facing more blackouts this week. But a failing power grid is only one form of darkness Cubans have had to contend with since Communism took control in the late 1950s and persecution became commonplace.
Many Christian leaders fled the country back then, but those who remained were prayer warriors who cried out to the Lord. By 1989, hearts all over Cuba hungered desperately for Christ. In fact, the crumbling shacks where persecuted house churches met were so overrun with seekers, “pastors actually had to issue tickets (with) a time limit (to make) room for other people,” writes International Christian Concern in a transcript of the forbidden video, “The Untold Story of Revival in Cuba.” (July 15, 2020)
“The secret police came and threatened the pastors, and said, ‘We’re going to imprison, we’re going to kill you if you don’t shut this down.’ And so, sometimes they’d close the church and only open it at night. But they couldn’t stop.”
Then, “Communist officials were coming in the back door saying, ‘We know God is real, but we know nothing about Him. Teach me. I want to find God.'”
Miracles happened “everywhere” at that time, and one official reported the number of new believers grew from 15,000 to 350,000 in just a few years.
Today, nearly 7 million people claim to follow Jesus, and conversions and miracles are still happening. A little over two years ago, eight Florida Baptist leaders teamed up with Western Cuba Baptist leaders for eight days of preaching, and close to 5,000 people made decisions for Christ.
Other reports have emerged that through the storms, earthquake, blackouts, shortages, and now oil blockades, all the more people are coming to Christ.
Let’s pray …
- For a great awakening to Christ’s love in the heart of every person in Cuba.
- For Bibles to make it into the hands of every seeker and Christian who needs one.
- For protection over churches, pastors and every Christian and their families.
- For all barriers against the knowledge of Christ to come down, so every person in Cuba will have the opportunity to hear the Good News in a clear way and be saved.
- For the veil to be lifted from the eyes of the lost, so they will see Christ for who He truly is and hunger for His love and grace.
- For those captive to evil spirits to be set free and find salvation in Christ.
- For comfort to those in prison, that God will meet them in powerful ways and show them His love; for revival to sweep through the prisons, bringing hundreds to faith.
- For those in government, gang leaders, prison wardens, and other oppressive or violent persecutors and abusers to have a personal encounter with the Living God that brings them to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord, so they will be saved and bless rather than oppress.
- For protection over the innocent, as the US and other nations put pressure on Cuba to change leadership.
- For wise leaders who genuinely care for the people to replace those bent on corruption and evil.
- For God to rescue the people of Cuba, and set them free to worship Him.
- For freedom of religion and for easy ways for Christians to connect and freely worship.
- For Christians to boldly shine Christ’s love to their neighbors and others God brings into their path; for His Spirit to flow through them in such a way that others are drawn to His light like moths to a flame.
