Myanmar’s Horrific War

While the world turned its attention to Iran after the assassination of perhaps 40,000 of its citizens in January, the peoples of Myanmar continue trapped in a gruesome war waged by a terrorist regime.

The brutal ruling junta has continued bombing its citizens since it took control by force in 2021. Countless homes, churches, schools, hospitals, internally displaced (IDP) camps and whole villages have been destroyed, and nearly a million people killed. In recent weeks, bombs and gunfire have continued to leave villagers horribly disfigured or dead in Karen State, including many children. A father and his son hid under their house as bombs dropped, but burned to death when one hit their home. Those who somehow escape hide in caves or dodge bombs and bullets in the jungles. The images of innocent people slaughtered are too graphic to show, too horrific to imagine. (See Free Burma Rangers.)

After a turn in the battle a couple of years ago, when persecuted peoples and rebel armies retook much ground from the military, a forced conscription policy and support from nearby Communist countries has shifted control back in favor of the junta, led by Myanmar’s governing President and Senior General, Min Aung Hlaing, as well as General Ye Win Oo, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services.

Since the conscription, countless villagers have been forced to into a battle against their own people. With no choice. No rest. No way out. Enslaved to fight day and night. Those who somehow escape are quickly recaptured or killed. More fortunate escapees encounter rebel forces, who treat them as equals, but still require them to fight, because there just is no safe space in Myanmar.

Such violence comes on top of 75 years of civil war in which minority people groups have faced violent persecution — even genocide, as in case of the Rohingya. In addition, Buddhist extremists have harshly persecuted Christians for decades. Things only got worse after the military coup. Now, 3.7 million people have been internally displaced, and around 1.6 million refugees have fled the country.

With reporters banned by the terrorist regime, you will hear little from media sources. But here at the Prayer Wall, we continue to pray for an end to the violence, and for salvation and true freedom for the peoples of Burma.

Lord, in the midst of Myanmar’s civil war, we ask You please to be a shield of protection around those who are in danger. Many are hiding in the jungles along the borders. Others are facing the violence head-on. God, please go to each person, and let them know they are found. That You see them, You love them, You care about what they’re going through, and You are the Way of salvation. Show Your glory to both those who are driven by hatred and violence and those who long for peace and security. You alone can save us from the true enemy who seeks to devour. Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy, but You have come, Jesus, to bring us eternal life. John 10:10. So, find every heart that has hardened against You and soften it. Hear every cry of the distressed, and answer them. Overturn every plan of the enemy, and bring forth a Great Awakening to You in Myanmar. Bring Hlaing, Oo, and every brutal officer, soldier and Buddhist to repentance. Invade their thoughts day and night, break them free from the demons that control them to wage war, violence, rape and other atrocities against citizens, and show them the way to salvation. Give them dreams and visions that will point them to Truth. Preach the Gospel clearly to them in a way they can easily understand, and open their eyes to see You as You truly are, tremble in fear of the Lord, and surrender to You. Get Bibles into the hands of every lost person all throughout Burma, and protect those who risk their lives to deliver them. Open up the air waves so those in every village, IDP camp, jungle, and even even enemy camps can receive radio broadcasts in all their many languages sharing the gospel in a way they can easily understand., May those who worship idols cast them down and worship You alone as God. Give Christians such faith, grace, hope and love during these trying times that they rise up like beacons of Light in the darkness, shining for Your glory and stepping out in such powerful acts of love and miracles that everyone around them sees the Light of Your love in them and are drawn to You like moths to a flame. Cast out the demons that have tethered so many Burmese to a life of fear, and set every person free to enjoy Your grace and love. Make a way where there seems to be no way for the war to end and Myanmar’s children to grow up in peace. In Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.
