Pastors Assassinated in Manipur

Unidentified gunmen assassinated three Baptist pastors and injured five other Christian workers Wednesday, as they returned from a peace conference in India’s northeastern state of Manipur.

Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou, senior Christian leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association India, had attended a gathering of Baptist leaders in Churachandpur, aimed at peace between the Kuki-Zo and Naga communities, but were ambushed on their way back to Kangpokpi. Among the injured were Rev. SM Haopu Sitlhou, Rev. Kaithang Singsit, Thangtinlen Sitlhou, and Lungoumang Lhouvum. (Surinder Kaur, Christian Daily International, May 14)

Manipur has long endured violence and persecution due to rivalry between ethnic groups. In 2023, Hindu Meiteis burned churches and homes, displacing more than 65,000 mostly Kuki Christians. Due to anti-conversion laws and violence against non-Hindus, India ranks the twelfth most dangerous country for those who seek to follow Christ.

India has more than 2,135 unreached people groups. But the Spirit is moving and thousands of Indians are coming to Christ, especially among ethnic groups in rural areas. As God transforms their hearts, they preaching the gospel to yet more villages.

Join us on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, for the International Day of Prayer for the Unreached, as we ask the Lord to make the way for His good news to reach every home and heart.

Lord, please have mercy. Heal the minds, hearts and bodies of Haopu, Kaithang, Thangtinlen, Lungoumang, and anyone else who survived the ambush. Be a Shield around them and all the Christians who attended the conference and are working for peace in Manipur, and protect them from all harm. Comfort the families of Vumthang, Kaigoulun and Paogoulen. Let them feel Your presence with them, and give them courage to forgive. We ask You, merciful God, to please bring an end to the violence in Manipur. We speak LIFE over the Christians in Manipur now in the name of Jesus. Fill them with hope, peace, faith and Your favor. Cover them with Your wings and anoint them to preach the Gospel to those who are lost and dying. May they shine Your Light so brightly darkness flees and those once bound to it are set free to know Christ. Father God, please pursue persecutors with Your love. Visit them in their dreams. Speak to them throughout the day. Urge them to lay down their idols and choose You alone. Convict them, Lord, of the evil they have done and draw them to repentance and salvation. Bring Christians to them who will love them and show them the way to You. Replace a spirit of death with LIFE abundant. And open the way for all the unreached peoples of India to hear the Good News about Christ and be saved. Give them a hunger to know You so strong they will not give up until they find You. May Your Kingdom come among the peoples of Manipur and the other more than a billion lost people in India. In Jesus name. Amen.
