Let’s join together in prayer today for the wife and children of Charlie Kirk, 31, an outspoken evangelical Christian, co-founder and CEO of the youth organization Turning Point USA, who was murdered yesterday. Father God, please wrap Your arms around Erika and their two children. In Your steadfast love, carry them through this difficult time and let them feel Your peace. Comfort them, lead them, and guide them. Raise the children up to love and follow You all the days of their lives. Bring Charlie’s killer to justice, but most of all, to salvation. Convict him of sin, fill him with fear of the Lord, and break the chains that bind him to the evil one. By Your great mercy, bring an end to senseless violence in this country, and awaken every heart to Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to protect religious freedom in an address at the Museum of the Bible, Washington, D.C., where he launched the America Prays initiative, a call to prayer for the rededication of the USA as “one nation under God.”
“When faith gets weaker, our country seems to get weaker. When faith gets stronger … good things happen for our country. It’s amazing the way it seems to work that way,” the President said. “Next year, we will celebrate 250 years since that Declaration was signed. As part of the grand commemoration … we’ve invited America’s great faith communities to pray for our nation, for our people, and for peace in the world…. America has always been a nation that believes in the power of prayer and we will never apologize for our faith — ever, ever, never, never.”
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner added that more than 70 churches and faith organizations have joined already. “Think about the miracles that would take place over the next year… the transformation that you and I could witness in communities all across the land.”
The Ask: What if one million Americans dedicated one hour a week to praying for our country and our people?
The Invitation: Will you join with at least 10 people to meet each week for one hour to pray for America?
The Opportunity: As we celebrate 250 years of freedom, this is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the principles that gave birth to this land of liberty. As George Washington famously said in his Farewell Address, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.”
The White House, America Prays
Lord, You said that if we Your people, called by Your name, would humble ourselves, pray, seek Your face and turn from our sinful ways, then You will hear from Heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14). We claim this promise now, and ask You to raise up a mighty army of prayer warriors who will cry out to You day and night to lift the clouds of darkness from over our government, our cities, our families, our schools, our homes, our minds and our hearts. Invade us, Lord. Every corner of our hearts, minds and lives. Invade every circumstance. Every home. Every office. Every dream. Every thought. Every person. Pursue us relentlessly. Push out the darkness with Your light. Open our eyes to see You as You truly are. Pour out Your love over us until we surrender to You.
We need Jesus. We need freedom. We need Truth. We need You, God, to overthrow the enemy, and overflow us with Your Spirit. To fill us with the fullness of Love. To give us compassion for those who are hurting. To give us courage to stand up and fight for what Heaven says is right. And the way we fight is with our prayers. Our prayers DO matter. We can’t see what’s happening in the heavenly realms, but we know that You, God, are calling us now to pray. To stand up and cry out to the God that we love, the One who created us and brought this nation into being for the very purpose of having freedom to worship God.
We cry out to the One who built this nation on faith to now bring back that faith. Whatever hope has been lost, renew it now, Lord. Wherever faith has drowned in the midst of fear and violence and hatred and tragedy, renew our faith now, Lord. We need You. Rise up, O God, and show yourself Strong. Bring forth miracles and signs and wonders from Your hand. Do not hide Your power and glory from us. Pour out Your love like a flood, overflowing this whole nation and pressing out into all the world, flushing out evil, cleansing every heart, setting us free to worship the One we were created for.
O Father, forgive us. We have lost ourselves in the midst of the messes we find ourselves in. We have lost our purpose. We have given in to anger, unforgiveness. So many of us have forgotten the cause of Christ and instead we have stood up for causes You never called us to, causes contrary to Your Word and Your perfect design. We have forgotten the God we love, and bowed instead to idols of social media, personal gratification, and complacency. Remind us, Lord. Call us to repentance. Pour out Your Spirit over us and revive Your church. Raise us up to love others, preach Your good news and shine for You like never before. Save the lost. Grow the saints. Bring forth a great Awakening in this country, with millions surrendering to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
