Hindis of North America

Join us now through May 2 for the National Day of Prayer.

Did you know there are nearly two million Hindi-speaking Indians in North America? About 80% are proficient in English, and they are among the wealthiest and most highly educated of those living here but born abroad. Many are doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, educators and specialists in I.T. The largest pockets are found in cities like New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Chicago.

The majority of this unreached people group of North America are Hindu, believing in anywhere from 33 to 330,000,000 gods. Although bowing before man-made idols in shrines is common among worshippers, most Hindus also believe in “one eternal god who is impersonal and unknowable, Brahman.” (See UPGNorthAmerica.com.)

O Eternal God, You are not like idols made of stone and wood that cannot see or hear or care about those who worship and pray to them. Isaiah 44. You see us, You hear us, You know us, You care. You are not like Brahman, for You are ever so personal, constantly pursuing us, inviting us to know You. You are loving, inviting, more real by far than any man-made statue. But satan has blinded unbelievers so they cannot see. Break the plaster from their eyes, O God. Isaiah 44:18. Topple their gods before them. Rise up, Almighty Lord of All, and show Yourself strong. Visit Hindus in their dreams at night and in visions throughout the day. Bring loving Christians to them to share Your good news. Give them such a hunger for Truth they will seek You with all their heart and find You. Lord, in some cities in the US, the Hindi-speaking communities have found You already. They have forsaken all other gods to know and follow hard after Jesus. For no earthly guru can lead people from darkness into light as they claim. Only You, Jesus, are the Way, Truth and Life. Only You are Light. And only You can guide us to Yourself. Please have mercy on Hindus both in North America and all throughout the world who still do not know the truth about Your sacrifice. Call them into churches. Reach out to them with Christian friendships, teachers, coworkers and more. Surround them with love coming from Your hand, love like they’ve never experienced before, love in such a way they know You alone are God, and You alone are Love. Make Your gospel known to every Hindu and awaken them from their slumber. Walk them out of fear, sin and darkness … into Your glorious Light. May they forsake all other gods and worship Jesus alone as their King. In Your name. Amen.

I am the first and I am the last;
    apart from me there is no God.
Who then is like me? … All who make idols are nothing,
    and the things they treasure are worthless.
Those who would speak up for them are blind;
    they are ignorant, to their own shame.
Who shapes a god and casts an idol,
    which can profit nothing?
People who do that will be put to shame;
    such craftsmen are only human beings.
Let them all come together and take their stand;
    they will be brought down to terror and shame.

The blacksmith takes a tool
    and works with it in the coals;
he shapes an idol with hammers,
    he forges it with the might of his arm.
He gets hungry and loses his strength;
    he drinks no water and grows faint.
The carpenter measures with a line
    and makes an outline with a marker;
he roughs it out with chisels
    and marks it with compasses.
He shapes it in human form,
    human form in all its glory,
    that it may dwell in a shrine.
He cut down cedars,
    or perhaps took a cypress or oak.
He let it grow among the trees of the forest,
    or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow.
It is used as fuel for burning;
    some of it he takes and warms himself,
    he kindles a fire and bakes bread.
But he also fashions a god and worships it;
    he makes an idol and bows down to it.
Half of the wood he burns in the fire;
    over it he prepares his meal,
    he roasts his meat and eats his fill.
He also warms himself and says,
    “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”
From the rest he makes a god, his idol;
    he bows down to it and worships.
He prays to it and says,
    “Save me! You are my god!”
They know nothing, they understand nothing;
    their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see,
    and their minds closed so they cannot understand.
No one stops to think,
    no one has the knowledge or understanding to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel;
    I even baked bread over its coals,
    I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left?
    Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him;
    he cannot save himself, or say,
    “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”
