Day 29: Caribbean

30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening

Verses for contemplation: Matthew 13:45-46

The first explorers to Latin America landed on the shores of the Dominican Republic in 1492, and subsequent ships brought both Catholic clergy from Europe and slaves from Africa. In 1783, a manumitted slave from the US served as a Baptist missionary to Jamaica, offering hope and bringing more than 450 to Christ. He was only one of many loving missionaries to this troubled region in the 18th and 19th centuries, where multitudes came to faith.

Today, all of these nations are considered Christian majority, and several are known for producing effective leadership and planting churches. Cuba has experienced ongoing revival despite persecution.

Haiti is perhaps the most dangerous country in this region due to gang violence and abductions. And yet, God is at work. Here at the Prayer Wall, as we prayed for Christians (including their children) captured by terrorists, we rejoiced as God led them in a miraculous escape past unseeing guards and over the mountains with their children on their backs:

Prayer points to consider:

  • Gang violence, abductions (especially Haiti)
  • Communism (Cuba)
    • Atheistic, authoritarian government
    • Churches attacked
    • Christians under house arrest
    • House churches illegal
    • Pastors interrogated, harassed
  • Poverty
  • Crime
  • Santeria (spiritism)

Prayer starter:

Awaken the islands of the Caribbean to Your love, O God. Give every heart a hunger for You. May they drop all they’ve been pursuing that is not You and seek You as their most precious treasure. Grow Your church. Purify the heart of every Christian. Set Your people free from sin strongholds and alcohol and drug addictions. Fill them with faith, hope and love, and all the gifts of Your Spirit. Use them as a mighty witness, pushing back the darkness with Your light and drawing everyone around them to You. Father, so many believers have lost loved ones to gang violence in Haiti. Others have been abducted. Please rescue those in danger. Keep them from harm and make the way for their escape. Use them to speak of Your love to their abductors in a way they will easily understand. Put an end to the reign of terror and raise up leaders in that country who will love You with all their heart and open the way for freedom and security. Your people in Cuba are still under so much surveillance and oppression, Lord. Please have mercy. Free Christians who are under house arrest. Speak through pastors who are interrogated and harassed. Give them patience, kindness and forgiveness. Shine Your love through them so their persecutors will feel drawn to the peace they see in them. Grow Your church in this region, Lord. Repress wrong and bring forth right. Raise up a generation on fire for Your cause, who will do what it takes to walk in truth, integrity and love, drawing every heart on every island and beyond to You.

Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 11-April 9, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!

Lord, please surround every Muslim in the Caribbean with loving Christians who will show them what Love is like. Lift the veil from their eyes so they can see You clearly, and give them a hunger for more than what they’ve been living for. As they approach the end of Ramadan now, step into their dreams and answer their desire to know God by showing them Christ. Bring about a great revival within every Muslim community in the Caribbean, drawing all to faith in Christ through Your steadfast love and grace.

Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we have been sharing with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:

Search the internet to choose recipes from Dominican Republic, St. Vincent/Grenadines, Cayman Islands, Cuba, St. Kitts/Nevis, Saint Lucia, Antigua/Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Trinidad/Tobago, Grenada, Haiti, and/or Jamaica. You can also invite family members to research some of these countries and share their findings as you pray together. Menu suggestions: Trinidadian Curry Chicken, pigeon peas and rice (Bahamas), fried sweet plantains

You can also go to Joshua Project to discover unreached peoples, and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs to see where and how Christians are persecuted.

If you would like to plan ahead for international meals, see the “Dinner and a Prayer” section at the bottom of our 30 Days page or in the back of your 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Vol 2 book.
