30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Verses for contemplation: Psalm 28
Many of the early missionaries to South America died as martyrs, including Allen Gardiner of England, who journeyed 1,000 miles through the Argentine wilderness in the 19th century sharing Christ with tribes he encountered along the way with little to no success. He eventually starved to death when natives of Tierra del Fuego stole his team’s supplies. His dying prayer recorded in his diary was for the Lord to send more workers. Another notable missionary, Elisabeth Elliott, led to Christ those from the Auca tribe of Ecuador who murdered her husband in 1956.
For many years now, much of South America has enjoyed revival with thousands, even millions coming to faith yearly. In fact, Brazil is on its way to becoming the first evangelical-majority nation in mostly Catholic Latin America. Today, missionaries from South America carry the Gospel up into hidden villages and tribes near them, but also to closed countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Prayer points to consider:
- Hidden tribes yet unknown (Brazil) and certainly unreached
- Dictatorships, corruption
- Organized crime, violence
- Pastors, Christians targeted by cartels
- Attacks against those who convert from indigenous/local religion
- Secular intolerance of Christians
- Poverty
- Syncretism (mixing spiritism with Christian beliefs)
- Animism (spirit worship), especially among indigenous tribes
Prayer starter:
Lord, we thank You for the many believers in this region. Please grow Your church strong in faith, love and witness. Raise up youth who will defy current cultural trends and choose purity, integrity, Christ-like love and truth instead. In the midst of much economic upheaval, bless faithful believers so abundantly others will take notice and seek You. Give the lost such a hunger for You they drop their worldly pursuits and choose You as their one passion. Give pastors and other Christian leaders courage to remain faithful to their wives and raise their children up in love. Wherever there is syncretism, infighting or nominalism, cleanse Your church, O God. Bring Your people back to what matters most. Be a Shield around Christians in danger. Comfort and encourage them to stand strong and loving in the face of opposition. Overcome the darkness all around them with Your light in them. Bring down the cartels. Open the eyes of those bent on evil to see Your hand protecting the innocent, so they will fall to their knees in fear of the Lord and surrender to You. Raise up Christians who will lead their nations to walk in righteousness, integrity and freedom. Lord, in this region are tribes untouched by outsiders. Their numbers and languages are yet unknown, and missionaries are forbidden. But You know them, Lord. Reach into every tribe, language and heart with Your Good News. Heal the sick, save the lost, and awaken all of South America to Your truth and light. Call out prayer warriors and missionaries who will join together with You to reach every heart and nation with Your love.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 11-April 9, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, the Muslim population of South America is growing. New mosques are sprouting up in Argentina, Brazil and other areas. Please meet those communities in powerful ways, with Christians pouring out Your love and grace upon them in such vast measures Muslims cannot help but surrender to Your truth. Open up easy conversations and friendships between Muslims and dedicated Christians who can share the Gospel in a way they will easily understand. Give every Muslim in South America a hunger for You, Jesus. Awaken them to Your love. In Your name. Amen.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes from Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, Paraguay, Peru, and/or Ecuador. Let your children choose countries to research and share with the family for prayer. Menu suggestions: Colombian arepas, stuffed zucchini (Uruguayan zapallitos rellenos), Brazilian churrasco steak, flan
You can also go to Joshua Project to discover unreached peoples, and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs to see where and how Christians are persecuted.
