30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Verses for contemplation: Psalm 42
The Bible records several prophecies regarding North Africa, and in Matthew 2:13-20, Jesus’ family fled to Egypt to avoid persecution after His birth. (See Matthew 2:15 and Hosea 11:1). Acts 2 suggests those who heard the Gospel in their own language at Pentecost would have taken it back to Egypt and Libya among other nations.
Today, North Africa is nearly 99% Muslim (with the exception of South Sudan, which is considered 65% Christian). In the countries marked red on our map below, missionaries are forbidden and converts from Islam to Christianity face severe persecution, including beatings, imprisonment, even execution.
In addition, nearly 8 million people in South Sudan are now facing acute malnutrition or starvation. Let’s pray!

Prayer points to consider:
- Unreached peoples (especially Sudan!!)
- Islamic extremists
- Churches burned, believers (especially converts from Islam) attacked, kidnapped
- Christians imprisoned, executed
- Demon worship among some tribes
- Hunger, poverty, famine (especially South Sudan)
- Stolen property (bandits and terrorists)
- Human trafficking, prostitution, slavery
- Displaced families (from violence and famine)
Prayer starter:
Father God, long have Your people suffered in this region. Please have mercy. Make a way of escape for those who are enslaved. Heal the wounded and broken. Comfort those who mourn. Give hope, faith and courage to Christians and protect them from harm. Empower them to shine Your love so brightly those who walk in darkness will be drawn to You like moths to a flame. For every believer who has lost home or property, we ask You, Lord, to bless them 100-fold. For every family mourning the loss of a loved one, we ask You to multiply their joy with whole villages coming to faith. For every church that is attacked, plant 1,000 more. Rescue women and children from abuse and prostitution. Pursue their abusers relentlessly until they repent and surrender to Your love. Rescue those who are in danger, hide them from opressors who seek to do them harm, provide for all their needs, and bring forth justice. Cast out the darkness with Your glorious light, O God. Make a way for those who do not know You to at last hear Your Good News and believe. Set those bound to demons free. Give Muslims a deep hunger for Truth. May they drop their weapons and hatred, seek the God of Love, and find You. Meet them in their dreams. Talk to them throughout the day. Connect them through social media to Christians and a Bible so they can hear the truth, and give them courage to follow You, even knowing it could cost them their jobs, families, and lives. Awaken North Africa to Your love. Make streams of Living Water flow throughout the desert of people’s hearts, and bring forth abundant LIFE.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 11-April 9, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, please have mercy on the many Muslims in North Africa. Those who convert from Islam or even inquire about You are often excommunicated from their families, beaten, imprisoned or killed. Please be a Shield around both believers and seekers. Surround them with Your angels and keep them from harm. Make a way for them to safely connect with other believers, grow in their faith and share with others who also need You. May the fame of Jesus’ name, love and salvation spread far and wide through every country in this region, and may hundreds of new churches spring up from the “ground” this year.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Western Sahara, Sudan, and/or South Sudan. Ask your children to research some of these countries to find barriers to the Gospel, and then share those together with the family before you pray. (See Open Doors’ World Watchlist.) Menu suggestions: Moroccan chicken tagine, Egyptian koshari, rougag (Tunisian flatbread), makroud el louse (Algerian almond cookies)
You can also go to Joshua Project to discover unreached peoples, and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs to see where and how Christians are persecuted.
If you would like to plan ahead for international meals, see the “Dinner and a Prayer” section at the bottom of our 30 Days page or in the back of your 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Volume 2, book.
