30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Verses for contemplation: John 10:7-16
Christianity spread into Eastern Europe in the first centuries after Christ’s resurrection and eventually became the main religion in many of the countries on our map below. But for most of the 20th century (1922-1991), Christians in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and other nations annexed by the USSR endured severe persecution, as the Communist regime fought to suppress religious worship and promote atheism.
Today, most Eastern European countries once again claim a Christian majority (mainly Eastern Orthodox and Catholic), with the exception of largely nonreligious Czechia and Estonia. In recent years, Ukraine had become a hub for evangelical missions in the region. Now due to war with Russia, about 8 million Ukrainians have been displaced within their borders and 8.1 million refugees are scattered throughout Europe. Let’s pray God uses this terrible tragedy to grow His church and bring millions to faith who may not otherwise have met Christ. (See our Pray for Ukraine and Russia page.)
Prayer points to consider:
- Unreached people groups — mainly Islamic and Jewish
- Ukrainian war refugees (but also many Russians have fled into Eastern Europe seeking freedom from oppression or hoping to evade fighting in the conflict)
- PTSD and other effects of war
- Sex trafficking (especially in Lithuania, Moldova and Ukraine)
- Labor trafficking and poverty (especially in Lithuania)
- Domestic violence and rape (especially in Ukraine and Moldova)
- Post-Communism authoritarian government (Belarus)
- Secularism (Czechia and Estonia)
- Nominal Christians (those who claim Christianity but do not live as true followers of Christ)
Prayer starter:
Lord, please awaken Eastern Europe to You. Still so many have closed themselves off from the Gospel because of cultural and religious reasons. Step into their space, Father. Invade their lives loudly with Your love. Show them who You are, and draw them into Your Kingdom. Give courage to those who have resisted because of fear of what people will think of them, and overwhelm them with such a hunger for You they cannot resist Your open arms. Tear down every wall of darkness and evil all across these nations, and flood them with Your light. Rescue those who have been enslaved through trafficking and drugs. Set them free from their oppressors, and bring them to safety. Heal their hearts from the abuse they have endured, and link them into caring, loving churches that teach Your Word with power. Get up in the face of their abusers and show them Your glory. Pierce their hearts with the need for repentance; then by Your mercy, Father, save them. Raise up Your church as a mighty army, passionate for the things of Your heart and for helping every person know of Your great love. As they rescue the hurting, as people are saved and their hearts are transformed, as You perform signs and miracles and wonders people never imagined possible, please, O God, make sure the news of Your greatness and love reaches into every home and penetrates every wall of every heart. Plant the seeds of Your Good News so deep, the roots spread out and salvation springs up, a great harvest bearing much fruit for Your name. And please, God, heal the hearts and minds of Ukrainians and others suffering from war, hardship, displacement and PTSD. Bring Christians to them to counsel and comfort them, sharing Your Good News and showing Your love in tangible ways. Show them so clearly that You are the Home they’ve been looking for. Use this terrible tragedy in Ukraine to bring about a church planting movement all throughout Europe.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 11-April 9, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, the war in Ukraine has affected everyone in this region, including those adhering to Islam. In addition, many Muslims in Eastern Europe have lost friends and relatives to the earthquake in Turkey and other Middle Eastern tragedies. Please, Lord, comfort them. Let them know You are the true Home they have been longing for. Draw them up into Your arms. Meet them in their dreams. Bring Christians to them to show them Your love. Make a way for them to hear Your Good News in a language and manner they can easily understand. And save them. Set aside this time of seeking You during Ramadan as a holy time where they truly find You. Lift the veil from their eyes so they can see You as You truly are: arms open wide, eyes filled with love, and grace to overcome their sin and give them eternal life.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes from Belarus, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and/or Ukraine. Invite family members to research some of these countries and share prayer points as you pray together. Menu suggestions: Hungarian goulash, Estonian rye bread, Polish vegetable salad, yabluchnyk (Ukrainian apple cake)
