30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Verses for contemplation: Hebrews 13:1-8
Several of the first Christian churches mentioned in the New Testament sprang to life in Italy, Macedonia and Greece on Paul’s missionary journeys. As the centuries moved on, the Roman Catholic Church established its papal seat in Holy See (of Rome). In the 16th century, Spanish priest Ignatius of Loyola founded “The Society of Jesus,” or the Jesuits, who became the first missionaries to East Asia and are well-known for their work among indigenous peoples in the Americas. Today, nearly 48% of all Europeans who claim to follow the Christian faith are Catholic (followed by Orthodox 32%, and Protestant 19%).
Christianity is the main religion of Southern Europe, although Kosovo holds a Muslim majority. Most of the unreached people groups numbered in the map above are Islamic. In recent years, due to war and hardship in Islamic countries, vast numbers of Muslims have fled their homes to seek asylum in Southern Europe.
Prayer points to consider:
- Unreached people groups — mostly Muslims, but also Jews (mainly in Italy)
- Refugees from Muslim countries
- Child trafficking (especially in Macedonia)
- Nominal Christians (those who claim Christianity but do not live as true followers of Christ)
Prayer starter:
Father, please have mercy on this region. Many cling to religion, but don’t yet know You personally. Make Yourself known in powerful ways, as in days of old, when You walked among us, healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, raising the dead, and preaching the way to salvation. Tear down every wall that stands in the way of intimate relationship with You, and give hearts such a hunger for You they will read the Bible voraciously, let the power of Your love transform them, and live out the purposes You created them for — to enjoy Your great love, to love You back, and to lead many to You through Your love in them. Revive the church in this region, Lord. Raise up those who will defend the cause of the weak and help rescue and heal the downtrodden. May everyone know we are Christians by our love. Call out those who will cross over linguistic, religious and cultural barriers to preach Your Good News in such a way that all will hear and understand. Anoint missionaries, evangelists and pastors to reach beyond borders, carrying Your love to those who have never experienced it yet. Give all Christians in this region favor with those around them, and transform hearts so dramatically others will be drawn to You like moths to a flame. Awaken innovative ways to share Your love through art, music, education, and all avenues of life. Everywhere Christians live, shine through them so brightly, the darkness dissipates and people are set free. Awaken this region to You. Rescue children who are in danger. Bring loving Christian families around them to help them to wholeness, healing and salvation.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 11-April 9, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, please awaken the hearts of Muslims throughout Southern Europe. As they seek to encounter You this month, open their eyes to see You, their ears to hear Your voice, their minds to recognize Truth. So many Muslims fleeing countries devastated by economic crisis, war, oppression and violence have sought refuge in this region. Rise up, Jesus, and show them You are the Refuge and Home they’re looking for, the One who made a way for them to truly be free. Whatever ways they have resisted hearing about Your sacrifice and the truth of who You are, tear down those walls now and step in to save them once and for all. Bring Christians to them who will love them into Your arms and show them the way of salvation.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes to cook for dinner from Albania, Andorra, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, and/or Spain. Invite your children to choose a missionary or other well-known Christian from this area, research them and share about their life and walk with Christ over dinner. Talk about barriers to the faith and challenges countries in this region now face. Then pray together as a family. Menu suggestions: tapas, spaghetti and meat sauce, briam (Greek roasted vegetables), Serbian no-bake sand cake (pijesak torta)
