Love through the Fire

As wildfires raged through New Mexico, devastating more than 300,000 acres and displacing thousands of people, God has been answering our prayers here at the Prayer Wall.

When the Calf Canyon/Hermit Peak Fire ripped through the evacuated town of Rociada, many people lost their homes, including several members of Rociada Baptist Church. Twice the flames burned onto the church property, but never damaged the building.

Due to extreme heat, Rociada’s water storage system was compromised, but RBC’s well was not, so the church was able to provide drinking water and restrooms for those in need, including National Guard and law enforcement personnel manning roadblocks.

When the same fire affected Las Vegas, prayer meetings erupted in churches throughout the city. Members of First Baptist Church distributed food and supplies to evacuees and opened their doors as a place for disaster relief volunteers to sleep.

In Jemez Valley, churches provided help to people affected by the Cerro Pelado fire. Jemez Mountain Baptist Church acted as the valley’s evacuation center, feeding about 100 people a day, including firefighters, 40 evacuees the church housed and others from the community who were in need. They offered shelter and provisions for pets and livestock, and the church also served as a communication center for information on the fires, holding public meetings for the community and providing aid to front line firefighters.

For about six weeks, disaster relief teams from several states used First Baptist Church in Ruidoso as their base for helping those affected by the McBride Fire. James and Linda Paxton, members of the church who lost everything when their home burned to the ground, volunteered right alongside them.

Lord, thank You for the way You protected people and churches from harm. For Christians who lost much in the fires, please provide for their needs abundantly, so they also can abundantly help others. As churches and disaster relief teams help with cleanup and rebuilding, open up conversations about You, Jesus, with those who don’t yet know You. Let them see Your love and bountiful provision and move their hearts by Your grace and mercy. Use this terrible tragedy as a means to draw many people from darkness to Light. Awaken the hearts of people all throughout New Mexico to You. For those who have wandered from the faith, bring them back home. For those who are lost, save them. For those who love You already, set their hearts on fire with passion for Your name. We ask You for revival in New Mexico, Lord. Revive every church and multiply them abundantly. May thousands be baptized, washed clean by the waters of Your grace, and may children grow up in Christian homes filled with love. Raise up a generation of Christ-followers and passionate worshippers who will set the state and beyond aflame with love for You.

  1. Yesterday, a helicopter went down in New Mexico, and all 4 passengers from Bernalillo County died — three from the sheriff’s office and one firefighter. They had been dropping water buckets to help put out the East Mesa Fire, and were on their way home when they crashed. Let’s pray for their families today, as they mourn, and also for those who are still risking their lives daily to save others. πŸ™
