This morning the Lord woke me up pointing to all the many ways He invites us to freedom, but we refuse to listen. Has that happened to you? Has someone confronted you on a sin, but you argued in self-defense? Gave all the more excuses for why you need to do that? Blamed someone else? Did it all the more?
There’s an excellent book by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson called Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) which sums this up quite well.
The truth is, as much as we want to save face, we look all the more foolish when we refuse to own up to our mistakes everyone else can so clearly see. Like the little kid with crumbs all over his face saying, “I didn’t eat a cookie!” over and over. As if making our silly, wrong point or standing on that lie will somehow make it “right” or “true” if we dig in harder and scream it louder.
Lord, were there times when You invited us to freedom but we refused? In what ways have You shown us our wrongs so You could lead us to what is right, but we haven’t listened? Tear down our walls of self-defense and draw us back into Your arms. Too many times, we have bowed to pride instead of Love. O God, forgive us. Give us courage now to humbly repent and to do what it takes to let You set us free.
