I grew up overseas, as the daughter of missionaries. Many of my MK (missionary kid) friends have excelled in life. They feel at home, no matter where they are in the world, and the Lord uses them in powerful ways. In stark contrast, other MK friends have left the faith and made devastating choices. After the third MK friend committed suicide, the Lord pressed me to do an impromptu survey to find out what went wrong. After all, their parents loved the Lord with all their hearts and were doing amazing things for His glory.
This is what I found: Those who excelled in life had parents who purposed to spend meaningful quality time together with them on a regular basis. Those who did not had parents too busy for that.
It’s possible today’s MKs might answer differently. Even so, as my husband and I have been serving the Lord overseas nearly 30 years, we’ve been surprised to find many missionary families have never gone on a family vacation. Some work too hard. Others feel they don’t have enough money.
As we head into the summer months, let’s pray for pastors, ministers and missionaries we know personally, that God will provide for all their needs and show them just the ways He wants them to spend quality time together as a family. Pray He will open up vacation time and miraculously provide just the venue for that. Pray their marriages will thrive, and their children will feel loved and grow up to love the Lord with all their hearts and be used by Him in powerful ways. And while we’re at it, let’s pray the same for our own families.
