Only Hidden in Christ Are We Safe

I had a dream of people walking around with imaginary self-protective “walls” that in reality were just thin lines — a mere thread — not a wall at all. Just like we often do, the people in this dream came on way too strong in each situation, too self-important, too conscious of how they look, of how others perceive them, or of their need to be in control.

That tiny thread went before each person everywhere they stepped, and they looked to it, relied on it to protect them. But it only served to mark them as an easy, unprotected target for the enemy to attack.

Only when they dropped their solidity and chose to be transparent did everything finally become bright and clear and right. Only then were they truly protected. The enemy couldn’t find them when they disappeared.

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:3 NIV

Whatever we hold in secret the enemy can use against us. Transparency with God and with other Christians who love us and pray for us releases us from all our false pretenses and the protective walls we put up to keep from getting hurt. Transparency covers us with God’s true protection from our real enemy. The difficulty with putting up walls and trying to protect ourselves is that we’re just not that strong. We need Someone stronger. Only Christ is our true Shield, Protecter, Mighty Warrior, Fortress, Covering. When we try to take His job from Him, we only end up exposed to the enemy.

He must become greater; I must become less.”

John 3:30 NIV

Our “walls” are a mere illusion, nonexistent, except to mark us very clearly for the enemy to see how to attack us. Haven’t you noticed that the very things you try to protect yourself from are the very things that keep happening to you over and over again?

Pray that we, the people of God, will die to ourselves and come alive to Christ. Pray we’ll stop trying to take over God’s job, promoting our agendas, as if they’re His, and protecting ourselves, as if we can. Only when we lose ourselves in Christ will we truly be found. Only when He is our Hiding Place are we truly protected.
