Dozens of Girls Missing from Christian Camp

At least 82 people, including 28 children, have died in flash floods in central Texas, as the Guadalupe River rose more than 26 feet in just 45 minutes early Friday.

At the Christian summer camp for girls, Camp Mystic, raging waters swept children away as they slept, and owner and director, Richard “Dick” Eastland, lost his life trying to save them. Other counselors worked together to help as many of the 750 campers as they could to higher ground, where the children huddled together, singing and praying. Of the 27 missing on Saturday, one counselor and ten children still have not been found.

Camp Mystic is only one of many retreat centers and campgrounds that dot the Guadalupe River region. In total, about 1,000 people have been rescued and more than 42 are still missing.

Jane Ragsdale, the director of the all-girls camp, Heart O’ the Hills, also died in the floods. No others there were affected, as the camp was between sessions.

At Mo-Ranch Camp in Hunt, several hundred participants at a church youth conference were evacuated safely to higher ground.

Loving Father, please rescue those who are trapped, in danger or missing. Heal those who are injured, comfort those who mourn, provide for those in need, and rebuild the lives and homes of those who have lost so much. In the midst of terror, bring peace through Your love. Speak to those who fear for the future, and show them Your plan for their salvation. Do all these things in such a way that they will know You are the One who did that. When they cry out to You, answer them. Protect the children, heal hurting hearts and provide safe shelter, electricity, food and water for those without. Place within every soul a deep thirst for You. Remove every barrier that has kept them from salvation and give them courage to choose You as their Lord. Bring loving Christians to them to share Your Good News. For Christians who are homeless now or who have lost loved ones, please carry them through this difficult time like only You can. Renew their strength and empower them to encourage others around them who are also hurting, offering them hope, a safe shoulder to cry on, and the way to salvation. Bless Christians so abundantly they will also abundantly bless others in need, as they share Your good news with the lost. Bring forth a mighty movement of Your Spirit all across each of these areas affected by floods, leading thousands to faith in You. Open the eyes of the spiritually blind to see You as You truly are, and awaken every heart to Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
