More than 50,000 people from Christian communities in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been displaced and up to 106 killed after a string of attacks by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
The terrorist group affiliated with Islamic State (ISIS) killed close to 60 people, abducted others and set fire to 44 homes in the mainly Christian village of Bafwakoa on Wednesday, April 1. Two weeks prior, they murdered 50 and took others hostage in a string of attacks on Muchacha (March 11) and Babesua (March 16). In nearby Badengaido, ADF murdered ten. (Al Jazeera, April 2; Open Doors UK, March 31)
“My son was working in the mine. When the ADF fighters arrived, he was taken hostage along with the others. There, the kidnappers forced the hostages to wash the sand for three days so that they could extract gold,” said Reverend Kitika, a church leader from Muchacha. “The loyalist forces attacked the kidnappers, and while everyone was scattered, my son managed to escape. We give thanks to God for this miracle.”
Reverend Kitika is one of many Christians sheltering displaced children in the midst of yet other acts of violence this year. “They came from Mangurejipa in North Kivu after the [radical] Islamists attacked their village; yet here we are with them again here,” he explained. “These children left Badengaido on foot. They found a vehicle on the road that brought them here, where the church is providing them with accommodation. Their parents are still on their way. Let us pray that they arrive safely.
“As the body of Christ, we ask for the prayers of brothers and sisters across the world for the strengthening of the church and the return of peace, so that we may continue to spread the good news of Jesus Christ in all the villages.”
- Pray for God’s comfort and healing for those who are grieving and for church leaders burying their members.
- Pray God will provide for the needs of displaced Christian families in such abundant and miraculous ways, the lost will see His loving care and turn from Islam to Christ.
- Pray God will give Christians courage to forgive. Pray He will strengthen and grow the church in DRC, grounding every heart in truth and love and using them as a light to draw thousands of Muslims to Jesus.
- Pray for protection around every Christian, church and community, that Heavenly armies will fight for them, and all who seek to do evil against them will see the angels and flee rather than attack.
- Pray God will give every Muslim extremist a hunger for His love so strong they will lay down their weapons of hatred, evil and murder to seek Truth until they find Him. Pray Jesu will confront them in such powerful ways, they will fall to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord, and receive His grace and salvation.
