At least 61 died and 110 have been injured in heavy snow and rain over the past few days in Afghanistan. More than 450 homes have been destroyed and hundreds of animals have died in at least 15 provinces. An estimated 4-12 million people are at risk of starvation and over half the population is in need of humanitarian aid to survive.
In addition, last Monday a blast at a Chinese restaurant popular among Chinese Muslims in Kabul killed at least seven and wounded a dozen more. An Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack, reportedly because of the Chinese government’s oppression against Uighur Muslims. One Chinese and six Afghans died in the blast, and among the wounded are four women and a child.
Father God, please have mercy. Raise the temperatures, make a way for food to reach everyone who is hungry, provide warm blankets and fuel; but most of all, meet the people of Afghanistan in their time of need. Visit them in their dreams at night and in visions during the day. Warm their bodies, but above all their hearts. Give them a hunger for the more they were created for. You didn’t create them just to live and die in darkness, hunger, oppression and terror. You created them to know You, to enjoy Your great love for them, to love You back and spread Your love to all those around them. And yet, most have never heard Your Good News. They don’t know of Jesus’ sacrifice to free them from sin and death. They don’t know the one-and-only Way to eternal salvation. Please, don’t let even one more person die without a clear presentation of the Gospel. Lift the veil from their eyes and show them who You truly are. We ask this most of all for those who hold positions of leadership and power. Open their eyes to see You. Open their ears to hear You. Make Your presence, will and power so known, so clear, they fall to their knees trembling in repentance and surrender at last to You. Remove from power all those who seek to oppress, and raise up in their place those who love the Afghan people, who will open the way to freedom, especially freedom to worship the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. John 14:6.
