The God Who Made a Hijacker Cry

A Samaritan’s Purse plane carrying medical supplies from Juba, South Sudan to a mobile medical unit in the northeast was hijacked last week.

Yasir Mohammed Yusuf snuck on board and hid behind the cargo barrier until after takeoff. With gun in hand, he threatened to kill the pilot and another Samaritan’s Purse staff member, demanding they take him to Chad.

The pilot flew the plane in circles, sharing the good news and assuring Yasir that even though he’s doing this terrible thing, God still loves him.

That’s when the hijacker broke down and cried.

Soon after, the plane landed in Wau, South Sudan, where Yasir surrendered and was taken into custody by the National Security Service. 

As opposed to Sudan, which is mostly Muslim and ranks among the top five most dangerous countries due to horrific violence, South Sudan is 67% Christian. It is one of the poorest nations in the world, and also the newest, having only gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

Lord, thank You for so miraculously protecting the pilot, staff member, cargo and plane from any harm. Please protect Yasir, now that he’s heard the good news about Your love. Open his heart to surrender completely to You. Bring Christians to him while he’s in jail to encourage and disciple him. Turn his heart around completely to share Your love with other Muslims who live in fear and hatred. Even though Christians are a majority in South Sudan, Muslims make up a considerably large minority. Please be a Shield around every Christian, protecting them from harm. Provide for all their needs and bring Christian pastors and aid workers to those who have fled Sudan and sought safety from the violence. Use them to bring healing to traumatized and grieving hearts and bodies, and to share Your good news with the lost. Make Your people a beacon of light in the midst of so much darkness, shining the way to salvation and eternal life, and showing the lost abundant love, joy and peace that can be ours in Christ, even in such tragedy. Give all Muslims a craving for a better way, for salvation, for a God who loves, heals and restores, for a nation that blesses its people, rather than destroying them. Meet Muslims in their dreams and give them visions of You. Open their hearts to Truth and give them courage to leave their false religion of hatred, violence and murder to follow Christ. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are. Multiply Your church and awaken every mind and heart to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
