Men armed with rifles abducted 25 girls from their boarding school dorm at the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi state, Nigeria before dawn on Monday. They climbed over the fence, exchanged gunfire with police officers and killed the vice principal. One girl eluded capture, and another escaped later and arrived home safely Monday night.
Security forces and hunters continue to comb through nearby forests searching for the other 24.
This is the second mass school abduction in Kebbi in recent years. In 2021, bandits took more than 100 students and staff members from a government college. Sadly, at least 1,500 students have been kidnapped in the region since Boko Haram Islamic extremists took 276 Chibok schoolgirls over ten years ago.
Lord, please be near to these girls right now. If they haven’t yet heard the good news about Jesus, visit them in their dreams and let them know You are with them. Be a Shield around them and guard them from further violence and trauma. Point out their location to those searching for them, and make the way for their quick and safe rescue and return home. Bring Christians to them to help them through the trauma and share Your love with them. Please, Lord, bring an end to the violence in Nigeria. March in Your angel armies and crush the enemy’s plans. Pursue every bandit and terrorist with Your relentless love and furious power. Let them see Your angels guarding those they seek to harm, especially Christians, and bring them trembling to their knees in fear of You and repentance. Give them a deep hunger for You and show them the way to salvation. For every Christian or child persecuted in Nigeria, bring 1,000 Muslims to faith in You, Jesus. For Your everlasting glory and in Your name. Amen.
