In recent years, high numbers of Muslims have converted to Christianity, a “crime” punishable by death in 98% Muslim Iran, one of the top ten most dangerous countries in the world for those who seek to follow Christ.
Pray for courage, comfort, healing and the Spirit’s empowering for these and other persecuted Christians in Iran:
- Morteza (Calvin) Faghanpour Sassi, Hesameddin (Yahya) Jenidi and Abolfazl Ahmadzadeh-Khajani are three of seven Christian converts from Islam, arrested in Tehran province last year and pressured to renounce their faith. The others have not been publicly identified. Detained and tortured in Evin Prison for six months pre-trial, Morteza has only just now begun serving his nearly nine-year prison sentence. (Church in Chains, Nov 10)
- Aida Najaflou, 43, also a Christian convert from Islam, has been detained in Evin Prison since April. On October 31, she fell from her bunk bed and fractured her spine. Doctors recommended urgent surgery followed by a long recovery, but prison authorities sent her back to jail instead without adequate care and in extreme pain. Other prisoners protested, and eventually she was taken to another hospital. She and detained Christians Nasser Navard Gol-Tapeh, Joseph Shahbazian and his wife Lida Alexani had a court hearing in September, but their cases are still under review with no verdict. Aida has two sons, 10 and 13. (CIC, Nov 6)
- Mehran Shamloui, Abbas Soori and Narges Nasri were sentenced in March for house church activities. Mehran received ten years, but fled to Turkey, and then was deported back to Iran. In September, the Supreme Court rejected his application for a retrial. (CIC, Sept 9)
After the ceasefire with Israel on June 24, over 50 Christians were arrested in Iran, falsely accused of being spies.
Lord, please be a Shield around Morteza, Hesameddin, Abolfazl, Joseph, Lida, Nasser, Aida, Mehran, Abbas, Narges and all Christian prisoners in Iran. Protect them from torture, sickness and other harm. Provide for all their needs, encourage and uplift them, and shine Your light brightly through them to the other prisoners and guards. Open up conversations allowing Christians to freely preach Your Word. Lift the veil from the eyes of every Muslim so they will see You as You truly are, feel Your love and surrender to Your truth. Send Your angel armies to shield Christians, their families and underground churches all throughout Iran from persecution and harm. Father, so many lost Persians are weary of the violence and oppression. They are longing for Truth. Meet them in their dreams, provide the way for them to hear Your Good News such that they truly understand. Draw them into Your arms and save them, O God. The whole nation. Bring forth such a movement of Your Spirit that millions turn to You even this year. Grow Your church so fast it spills over borders to draw all nations and peoples into Your kingdom of Love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
