Drought in Iran, but Also Awakening

With the dams that supply Tehran’s drinking water on the verge of running dry, the president has spoken of evacuating the capital’s ten million people if no rain arrives by next month.

Facing its sixth consecutive year of drought, 2025 saw energy shortages and soaring temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), with only 2.3 mm (0.09 inches) of precipitation. Three weeks ago, nine dams were on the brink of drying out. Now, there are 19. (Maziar Motamedi, Al Jazeera, November 12)

But water is not Iran’s only thirst. A spiritual drought caused by oppressive Islamic rule known for its terrorism and violence against women, children, Kurds, religious minorities and even fellow Muslims has fueled a thirst for Love and Truth so strong, Iran’s underground church has now become the fastest growing in the world. Estimates put the current number of Christians at one million and climbing. While the world average evangelical growth rate sits at 2.6%, Iran’s races at almost 20%.

“Consistently, when darkness surrounds, heaven’s light always moves – crafting beauty, bringing hope and preparing dawn,” writes Open Doors, whose World Watchlist ranks the nearly 99% Muslim nation among the top ten most dangerous in the world for those who seek to follow Christ.

Lord, please take down those in power who oppress, and raise up leaders who will bless the people instead, bringing freedom to Iran, especially freedom of religion. Wrap Your arms around those who are injured, imprisoned or mourning loved ones who have died this year, and let them feel Your comforting presence and know it is You. Meet them in dreams and visions with Your arms open wide, inviting them to salvation. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are. Give them a thirst so deep for Love and Truth that they search for You with all their hearts and find You. Guide them to Christians, Bibles, websites, social media or other sources where they can find the answers to their questions about You. And awaken every heart in Iran to Your love. Tear down walls of religion, tradition, fear, prejudice and persecution, and bring forth Your kingdom in every village, town, city, home and heart. Multiply Your church by the tens of thousands this year, Lord. Hide house churches and Christians from those who seek to do harm, but open the doors to those who long for You and want to be saved. May Your Kingdom come to every heart in Iran. Whenever someone approaches a Christian, cause angels to visibly and gloriously appear as guardians for Your bride. Strike persecutors with such fear of the Lord, they will drop their weapons and inquire about You instead. Anoint believers to speak the truth in love, even when facing great danger. Move their hearts with forgiveness toward those who rage against them. May their faith, hope, love and purity shine so brightly everyone around them will be struck with awe and place their faith in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. It’s great to hear that the underground church in Iran is growing by 20%,! May God use the physical drought to compel people to find the Living Water!

Have a blessed LORD’S DAY! Please pray for an unbeliever widow whom I am loving. She lets me into her life a little bit then pulls away. I also may be leading a discipleship group at my church and separately discipling a former student who is working as the hostess at COTW. The GOTW group is going well and women are finding joy in studying God’s Word together. I am grateful.

Sending oodles and oodles of love and lots of hugs, Rebecca
