Pastor Wazir Singh and his wife Metu Devi left Hinduism to follow Christ a little over ten years ago, after a relative told them about Jesus. God miraculously healed Metu of a life-threatening disease and set Wazir free from substance abuse.
As they grew in their faith, Wazir felt God calling him to be a pastor and start a church. Soon after, persecution grew so intense, their family moved three times.
Then, several weeks ago, Hindu extremists burst through the doors of Pastor Wazir’s church, as Christians sang in worship, and began assaulting them. The assailants tried to force Wazir to teach about Rama, Ganesha and other Hindu gods, instead of Christ, and to read to the congregation passages from the Ramayana or Mahabharata Hindu scriptures instead of the Bible. When he responded, “My faith is in Jesus Christ, and my country gives me the right to choose whom I want to believe in and freedom to practice my faith,” they called the police and had him arrested.
Members of the Hindu nationalist Bajrang Dal youth wing of Vishva Hindu Parishad filed a formal complaint against Pastor Wazir, Metu, Jaspal Parmar, and two others referred to as Pastor Vinod and Bala, for “promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion,” among other charges.
A pamphlet which said, “Abandon all your idols and come to Jesus Christ,” was presented to the judge as evidence against Wazir. “My name and cell number were printed on it,” the pastor said. But neither he nor other Christians had printed the pamphlets. He believes the Bajrang Dal had them printed to frame him. “Looking at the pamphlet, (the judge) denied my release, and I was sent to jail.”
There, other prisoners tried to assault Wazir. “They said, ‘He converts people,’ and they attacked me, but Muslim inmates stepped in and rescued me from them,” Pastor Wazir explained. The following day, October 4, he was released on bail.
Metu also faced fierce persecution. Soon after her husband had been arrested, about 14 Christians gathered around her to support her and plan their next steps, but Hindu extremists again forced their way in and attacked the Christians.
“The mob began to assault (one man) ruthlessly, and when an elderly Christian woman tried to rescue him, they hit her as well,” Metu said. “They hit me and young children too. ‘We will not let you stay here. If we find you here, we will assault you,’ they said. ‘Conversions have been happening in this house, so we will set this house on fire, along with whoever chooses to stay. If you want to live, flee from this house.’”
Bruised and bleeding, the Christians ran for their lives.
“I fled from home with my children without any belongings and took shelter in the house of another Christian family about half a mile away for two nights,” Metu said. But the Hindu persecutors soon learned of their location, so the Christian family harboring the Singhs sent them away. Under cover of night, another pastor took Metu and her two sons, ages 14 and 10, to Haryana 80 miles away.
Police seized Pastor Wazir’s house, his security IDs and cell phone. “All my belongings are in the house, and we are left with nothing to live on,” he said.
Metu added, “I looked at my children and wondered how we will sustain, but then I found comfort in God’s Word that says He will never forsake us.”
On October 29, Rajasthan became the 12th state in India with an anti-conversion law, along with Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

India ranks 11th on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of most dangerous countries for Christians, up from 31st before Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014. Nevertheless, the Spirit is moving all throughout the nation, and multitudes are turning to Christ, many because of miracles of healing and even resurrection from the dead. Pray for Indian pastors and other faithful Christians who continue to share the good news with Hindus and plant churches among previously unreached peoples despite persecution.
Lord, please be a Shield around Pastor Wazir’s family, the other accused, their church family and all persecuted believers in India. Thank You for saving the Singhs, for healing Metu and setting Wazir free from his addictions. Thank You for the the courage You gave them to step out in obedience, plant churches and refuse to give in to fear when under attack. Please bless them abundantly and provide for all their needs. Give them a safe place to live where the children will thrive and have Christian friends, and use that whole family in powerful ways to draw lost Hindus and others into Your Kingdom. Thank You for the Muslims who protected Pastor Wazir from Hindu attackers in jail. Give them each such a deep hunger for You they will seek Truth with all their hearts and find Jesus. Open the spiritual eyes of the violent neighbors, the judge, the police and the inmates, so they will see You as You truly are and surrender to Your love. Set them free from bondage to idols and demons, and draw them to Yourself. Make the way for them to hear Your good news in a way they can easily understand. Show them their desperate need for salvation and give them courage to believe in Jesus. Protect the Christians in this church from any more harm or persecution. Surround them with Your angels and block every attack planned against them. Set the pastor and others free from all charges. Convict Hindu persecutors of their sin, and fill them with fear of the Lord. Lead them to the cross, where they can lay down their burdens and receive Your grace, trading in their worthless idols for a heart-transforming relationship with the God of Love. And Father, we ask You also for Narendra Modi, that You will bust through every barrier that has blocked him from hearing, understanding and receiving Your message of salvation. Break through the chains that bind him to demons and false gods. Visit him in his dreams at night and speak to him all throughout the day. Every time he presses to make India a Hindu nation, show him the One he is persecuting. Appear to him, standing before him in white, calling him away from idols and offering salvation through Jesus and eternal life. Bring him to his knees in surrender, and save him. Save all of India, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
