Afghanistan Earthquake, Philippines Typhoon, Melissa Aftermath, Avalanches

AFGHANISTAN: Just two months after September’s devastating earthquake that killed more than 2,200 and injured thousands more, a 6.3 magnitude quake rocked Kohlm in northern Samangan province this Monday, killing at least 27 and injuring almost 1,000. 

PHILIPPINES: The death toll from Monday’s landfall of Typhoon Kalmaegi, one of this season’s most powerful storms, has risen to at least 115, with more than 127 still missing, and 400,000 displaced due to flooding, mainly in Cebu. The islands have already been hit hard by several earthquakes and storms within the last few weeks. Nicknamed “Tino,” the present storm raced on to VIETNAM, already reeling from record-breaking rainfall, following Typhoon Matmo, which together have killed at least 40, flooded 80,000 houses and destroyed nearly 25,000 acres of farmland.

CARIBBEAN: Hurricane Melissa left a rising death toll of 68, including 32 in JAMAICA, 34 in HAITI, where 21 others are still missing, and one in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. No deaths were reported in CUBA, which also suffered greatly.

KENYA, UGANDA: More than 40 have died and dozens are still missing after landslides in the Great Rift and Kerio Valley regions last weekend.

ITALY: An avalanche in the Dolomite Mountains killed five Germans on Saturday, including a teen and her father. 

NEPAL: An avalanche on Monday killed seven climbers and injured eight others at Mount Yalung Ri.

Father, have mercy on those who survived, those who are mourning, and all those who have heard about these events. Quicken their hearts with a powerful hunger for Truth so desperate they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Rescue those in danger, comfort those who grieve, and speak to the hearts of those who are afraid or hurting. Touch each heart in such personal ways they will at last realize You are the One they long for. When they cry out to You, answer them, O Lord, in a way they will recognize You. Give the lost a longing for peace, meaning, acceptance and love; and then satisfy them with Your felt presence. Bring Christians to them to show them Your love, care for their needs and share the good news of Your salvation. Bless Your people abundantly so they will also abundantly share with those in need around them. Bring Christian counselors, medical workers, builders and aid workers to those in need. And set the captives free, Lord. Lift the veil from the eyes of the lost so they will see You as You truly are and surrender their hearts to You as Savior. In the midst of every trial and tragedy, push back the enemy’s purposes, and bring forth Yours. Convince us of Your truth. Let us feel Your love like never before. And bring forth Your Kingdom in every heart, home, city and nation. Yes, Lord, awaken the whole Earth to Your salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
