INDONESIA: About 300 rescuers continue their search for students, mostly boys aged 12-18, buried beneath the rubble of a Muslim boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, which was under construction for expansion and collapsed on them during afternoon prayers Monday. Female students praying in another section of the building were able to escape. A 6.5 magnitude earthquake Tuesday night in Sumenep, about 124 miles away, tightened space for those still in need of rescue. For several children discovered but trapped alive, rescuers were supplying food, water and oxygen. They carefully dug a tunnel, and were able to pull seven teens from the rubble Wednesday, five of them alive. Hope is dwindling for safe rescues of the others still missing. At least six people have died and more than 59 are still missing. Of the 100 or so who were wounded, more than 25 are still in hospital, many with head injuries and broken bones.
ETHIOPIA: At least 36 died and over 200 were injured Wednesday in Amhara, after a wooden bridge collapsed as worshippers visited the site of an Ethiopian Orthodox church still under construction, Arerti St. Marry’s Church in Minjar Shenkora Woreda.
Lord, please rescue those who are trapped, comfort those who mourn, heal those who are wounded, and provide for those in need. When they cry out to You, answer them in such miraculous ways they will know it is You. For Muslim families reeling from the ongoing tragedy in Indonesia, please visit them in their dreams and in visions. Give them a hunger for Truth, lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are, and show them the way to salvation. Bring Christians to them to comfort them and share with them the good news about Jesus. For those at the church gathering in Ethiopia who are nominal or cultural Christians, but do not yet have a personal relationship with Jesus, come and meet them in powerful ways to draw them to Yourself and save them. For those who know the gospel and have believed, strengthen their faith, ground them in Your Word, make the way for them to be discipled by those who walk closely with You, and use them to bring hundreds of Ethiopians to faith in You. Bring forth Your Kingdom in these nations and beyond. Awaken Ethiopia, Indonesia and the whole Earth to Your salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
