Deadly Earthquake in the Philippines

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in central Philippines Tuesday has left at least 72 dead and hundreds injured. Amid seven or more aftershocks, thousands of people have been sleeping on the streets.

Most of the victims are from the island of Bogo, including seven deaths in a village built to shelter victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,000 people in 2013. Last night, a magnitude 4.7 aftershock hit Bogo, shaking Cebu City and the Leyte islands.

The quakes come on the tail of two deadly typhoons that hit the Philippines about a week ago.

The thousands of Philippine islands are home to 90 unreached people groups who have yet to hear the good news of Christ. Most are indigenous tribes living in fear of evil spirits; others adhere to Islam. Nevertheless, revival has been sweeping the Philippines for many years now, with thousands of new converts reported and regular mass baptisms in the Pacific Ocean.

Lord, please rescue those who are trapped, heal the wounded and comfort those who are afraid or have lost much. Let them feel You near them, holding them through this difficult time. Speak to them tenderly and draw them to Yourself. When they cry out to You, hear them and answer them, Lord, in miraculous ways. Empower believers to share aid and especially Your good news during this difficult time, offering hope to those who have lost it and faith to those who are afraid. Father God, about 5.6 million people in the Philippines still don’t know about Jesus’ sacrifice. They live in fear of evil spirits not knowing about the Savior who loves them and has already conquered the enemy. Others think they know You as Muslims, but without Christ they cannot be saved. Only Jesus is the Way, Truth, and Life. John 14:6. Please call out Christians with a burden for the unreached who will cross political, language, geographical, religious, cultural and all other barriers to take Your good news where it’s never been before and translate the Bible into languages that still need to hear about Your love, grace and salvation. Don’t let even one more person die without the opportunity to choose You as Lord of their life. Thank You for the thousands who have turned to You in recent years. We ask You for all the more. Awaken Your church to love beyond barriers. Awaken parents to raise their children up in Your love. Awaken youth to live with purity and a passion for You. Awaken pastors to preach with the power of Your Spirit. Awaken the islands to truly live as Your Word and Love commands.
