What have the trials of these past five years nudged you to do that you might not have done otherwise? Has your prayer life increased? Have you shared the gospel all the more boldly? Have you pushed into the Lord in your quiet times, asking Him to set you free from that pesky stronghold that keeps distancing you from Him and others? Did you finally open that book with steps to freedom from anxiety?
Or have you sunk all the deeper in the mud of where you were before — endless debt, panic, depression, discord, worry, anger, fear, lust, overeating, and whatever else you struggle with?
While you may try to pray in the midst of all that, without faith, “prayer” becomes more like worrying with your eyes closed. It may or may not have the powerful results a heart surrendered to God in faith would — one that trusts in His sovereignty, listens to His voice, follows His lead, and lets Him change you and use you for His glory His way.
You see, you have an enemy. And he is out to destroy you. 1 Peter 5:8. He uses your trials to frustrate and discourage you, to tell you lies that distance you from God and others. If he can keep you worried, harried, and bound up in sin addictions and spiraling thought processes, then you are likely to miss the glorious purposes God has in mind for you in the midst of these trials.
No matter what the enemy is doing, God is doing much, much more. And it is GOOD. Because He is Good. Even if you can’t see all He’s doing, know this: He is always drawing you to Himself.
So, draw near to Him. James 4:7. (If you don’t know how, Dare to Be a Mighty Warrior is a great place to start.)
Lord, don’t let me waste these trials. Guide me into deep places of oneness with You, and set me free from the thought processes and sin strongholds that have held me back from the MORE You created me for. Show me what You want me to do that I’m not doing yet, and also the things I’m spending my time on that You never asked me to do. Give me courage to ask You constantly what You want to do and follow You there, surrendered to You. Take over my tasks, my days, my life, my everything. Draw me into the situations You want to use me in to make a difference, and flow through me to draw others into Your love. In Your name. Amen.

As another year approaches, choose to walk through every trial with your eyes fixed on the Lord. Look for what He’s doing and follow Him there.
