9-19 Earthquakes in Russia, Indonesia, Chile, as Mexico Remembers and Afghanistan Recovers

On Friday, September 19, MEXICO commemorated 40 years since the devastating 8.1 earthquake in 1985 that killed somewhere between 12,000 and 35,000 in Mexico City. On the same day in 2017, just two hours after an annual earthquake drill, a 7.1 quake hit, killing close to 400. Once again, on the very same day in 2022, a third deadly temblor rattled Mexico, adding to the anxiety.

On September 19 this year, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook central Papua, INDONESIA, while a 5.6 rattled CHILE’s Tarapaca region. Then early the next morning, a magnitude 5.0 hit just off TAIWAN’s west coast, following June’s 5.9.

After three earthquakes on Monday, a 7.8 magnitude temblor hit RUSSIA’s Kamchatka region Thursday, followed by more quakes, one every hour, through the morning of September 19, all aftershocks of the 8.8 quake on July 30. 

In AFGHANISTAN, the aftershocks from the devastating earthquakes earlier this month that killed more than 2,200 have calmed, but women are still suffering in the aftermath. In some locations, rescues were complicated by restrictions against women speaking to or being touched by a man, and in many situations female staffers with aid organizations were not permitted to work. Now, an estimated 60% of Afghans still missing are women, as are more than half of those who died or were injured. Those who lost homes and husbands have been left without shelter or a means to feed their children at a time when temperatures have already begun to drop. Sadly, living in the open makes these women all the more susceptible to violent assaults. This year’s earthquake comes on the tail of three 6.3 earthquakes in 2023 that killed more than 2,400.

Lord, in each of these locations anxiety has become a heart terrorist. Please draw near to those on edge, those who can’t sleep for fear of yet another earthquake. Visit the lost in their dreams, speak to them throughout the day, show them how short their time on Earth is and how desperately they need You. Bring Christians and Bibles to them to show them the way to salvation. Cast out their fear with Your perfect love. 1 John 4:18. Open the way for Christians to speak truth, show love, share Your gospel message, and bring medical and other aid, as well as godly counsel to those suffering from trauma. For only in You is there Peace that passes understanding. Philippians 4:6-7. Be a Shield around women and children in danger, especially in Afghanistan. Make a way for Your gospel to reach into every dark corner where superstition or Islam has ruled and topple every lie. Provide fuel, blankets, shelter, food and water in such miraculous ways those in need will know it is from You. Strike every heart with a fierce hunger for Truth and Love. Be larger than the mountains, stronger than the earthquakes, gentle as a dove when You answer their prayers and bring them salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
