Earthquakes, Protests, Terrorists and a Hippo

AFGHANISTAN: A dangerous 5.2 magnitude aftershock hit the southeast Friday within 12 hours of another powerful aftershock Thursday. Both came just days after earthquakes Sunday and Tuesday killed more than 2,205 and injured some 3,640.

NEPAL: At least 19 have died, hundreds have been injured and the prime minister has resigned during violent youth-led protests against by government corruption, a ban on social media platforms, and poor economic opportunities.

NIGERIA: Boko Haram terrorists killed more than 60 people on Friday in the mostly Muslim village of Darul Jamal, where internally displaced residents had only recently returned home. The Islamic militants attacked in the night, burning homes and forcing over 100 people to flee.

IVORY COAST: Eleven people, including women, little girls and a baby, are missing after a hippopotamus capsized their boat near the town of Buyo Friday. Three survived and were rescued.

MEXICO: A train hit a double-decker passenger bus Monday in Atlacomulco, killing at least 10 and injuring more than 40.

PORTUGAL: An electric streetcar in Lisbon crashed Wednesday, killing 16 and injuring many others.

ISRAEL: At least six died and several more were injured in a mass shooting at a Ramot Junction bus stop in Jerusalem Monday. A security officer and a civilian returned fire, killing the gunmen, Muthanna Omar, 20, and Muhammad Taha, 21, both from villages in the West Bank.

So many people hurting and in need of the salvation only Jesus can give. Let’s pray!

Father God, please comfort those who mourn, heal those who are injured, rescue those in danger, bring an end to violence, and give wisdom to those in power as they deal with each of these situations. But most of all, Lord, we ask You to awaken every heart — both victims and violent offenders — to You. Steal into their dreams, meet them throughout the day, get up in their face, invade their space, and show them who You truly are. Tear down every wall, remove the plaster from the spiritual eyes of the lost, and let them see You as You truly are. Visit them relentlessly until every person knows how to be saved. Give them a hunger for You so deep they will lay down whatever they’re holding onto that is not You, and surrender to Your love. Give Christians in each of these situations and nations favor and bless them so abundantly they will have more than enough to share with those in need. Catch hearts on fire for Your purposes, O God. Begin a church planting movement in each of these countries that spreads out across the world, turning every heart to You. Change the face of the land, so that what once was a spiritual desert now flows with streams of Your Living Water. May every heart taste and see that You are good and surrender to Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
