AFGHANISTAN: The death toll from Sunday’s midnight earthquake and a subsequent 5.2 aftershock Tuesday has risen to over 1,411, with more than 3,124 injured in the mountainous eastern region. Dozens of commandos have been airlifted to rescue survivors where planes cannot land.
SUDAN: A landslide leveled the village of Tarasin in Central Darfur Sunday, leaving only one survivor and killing anywhere from 350 to 1,000 people. Only nine bodies have been recovered so far. The village was home to about 300 families.
INDONESIA: Thousands of protesters set fire to legislative buildings and looted the homes of parliamentarians last weekend. Ten people have died and at least 20 are missing since demonstrations began last week.
USA: At least 58 people were shot, nine fatally, over Labor Day weekend in Chicago, Illinois.
Father God, please speak to each of the survivors of these tragedies in powerful and personal ways to draw them to Yourself. Comfort those who mourn, heal those who are injured, rescue those in danger, provide shelter, food and water to those in need, bring an end to conflict, and give wisdom to those in power as they deal with each of these situations. But most of all, Lord, we ask You to awaken every heart to You. Steal into their dreams, meet them throughout the day, get up in their face, invade their space, and show them who You truly are. Tear down every wall, remove the plaster from the spiritual eyes of the lost, and let them see You. Visit them relentlessly until every person knows how to be saved. Give them a hunger for You so deep they will lay down whatever they’re holding onto that is not You, and surrender to Your love. Give Christians ministering to those in need favor, both with victims’ families and with authorities. Bless them abundantly, even miraculously, to have more than enough, and empower them to show Your love and speak Your gospel of hope in ways those listening can easily understand. Save the lost and catch every heart on fire for Your purposes, O God. Begin a church planting movement in each of these countries that spreads out across nations, turning every heart to You. Change the face of the land, so that what once was a spiritual desert now flows with streams of Your Living Water. May every heart taste and see that You are good and surrender to Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
