TURKEY: A 6.1 earthquake in Balikesir province Sunday evening was felt as far away as Istanbul. At least one died, dozens were injured, and buildings crumbled to the ground.
LEBANON: Six Lebanese army experts were killed in an explosion while dismantling a Hezbollah arms depot in Tyre province. Under the leadership of Lebanon’s Christian president, U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanese troops have been seizing Hezbollah posts since the Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire last November.
ECUADOR: Eight died in a shoot-out Sunday at a nightclub in Guayas, one of four provinces currently under a state of emergency because of gang violence.
HAITI: Saturday, the island nation’s government declared a three-month state of emergency due to a surge in gang violence. From April to June this year, more than 1,500 people died, 609 were injured, and hundreds have been kidnapped.
USA: Heavy rainfall and flash floods killed one in Nebraska this weekend and ravaged parts of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin. Milwaukee was among the hardest hit. Meanwhile, four children and two adults died in a house fire in Charles County, Maryland on Sunday. In addition, Colorado wildfires have burned more than 120,000 acres; the Gifford Fire in Santa Barbara, California has devoured more than 119,000 acres, and the Canyon Fire northwest of Los Angeles, which erupted on Thursday, has forced thousands to evacuate. At least three died and one was injured in a mass shooting at a Target in Austin, Texas yesterday; the shooter is in police custody.
Father God, thank You for those who were trapped who have now been rescued. Speak to them in personal ways and draw them to Yourself. Please comfort those who mourn, heal those who are injured, rescue those in danger, bring an end to conflict, and give wisdom to those in power as they deal with each of these situations. But most of all, Lord, we ask You to awaken every heart to You. Steal into their dreams, meet them throughout the day, get up in their face, invade their space, and show them who You truly are. Tear down every wall, remove the plaster from the spiritual eyes of the lost, and let them see You. Visit them relentlessly until every person knows how to be saved. Give them a hunger for You so deep they will lay down whatever they’re holding onto that is not You, and surrender to Your love. Give Christians favor and bless them so abundantly they will have more than enough to share with their lost neighbors. Catch hearts on fire for Your purposes, O God. Begin a church planting movement in each of these countries that spreads out across nations, turning every heart to You. Change the face of the land, so that what once was a spiritual desert now flows with streams of Your Living Water. May every heart taste and see that You are good and surrender to Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:1 rsv
