PAKISTAN: Monsoon rains and flooding killed at least 65 in Punjab province and injured nearly 300 in one 24-hour window Wednesday-Thursday, bringing the total of deaths up to more than 180 in the past three weeks.
INDIA: At least 33 died and dozens were injured by lightning strikes in Bihar this past week, bringing the total up to 47 or more in the past month. Last week, 15 died in Gujarat when a bridge collapsed.
USA: The death toll from floods in Texas is now at 135. Flash floods in New York City and New Jersey killed two on Monday. Lightning at an archery range in New Jersey killed one and injured 14 Wednesday.
IRAQ: 61 died Wednesday in a fire at a large shopping center in Kut.
SYRIA: Clashes broke out between Druze and Sunni Bedouin minorities in Sweida this weekend, and Syrian forces stepped in. ISRAEL then fired on Damascus in defense of the Druze and the Israeli border. Several ceasefires between these groups have been declared and broken over the past few days. At least 400 people, including women and children, have died since Monday.
Father God, please comfort those who mourn, heal those who are injured, rescue those in danger, bring an end to conflict, and give wisdom to those in power as they deal with each of these situations. But most of all, Lord, we ask You to awaken every heart in Pakistan, Iraq, India, Syria, and the USA to You. Steal into their dreams, meet them throughout the day, get up in their face, invade their space, and show them who You truly are. When Hindus bow before idols and Muslims bow before Allah during daily prayers, give them visions of You, Jesus, revealing to them the truth of Your death and resurrection and inviting them to salvation. Tear down every wall, remove the plaster from their spiritual eyes, and let them see You. Visit them relentlessly until every person in Iraq has seen You and knows how to be saved. Give them a hunger for You so deep they will lay down religion, hatred and violence, and surrender to Your love. Be a Shield around every Christian and protect them from persecution and harm, especially in India, Iraq, Syria and Pakistan. Give them favor with their neighbors and family members, and connect them with other Christians who can help them. Build their faith and deepen their intimacy with You. Bless Christians so abundantly by Your hand that they will have more than enough to share with their lost neighbors, and then open up conversations that lead to You. Catch hearts on fire for Your purposes, O God. Begin a church planting movement in each of these countries that spreads out across nations, turning every heart to You. Change the face of the land, so that what once was a spiritual desert now flows with streams of Your Living Water. May every heart taste and see that You are good and surrender to Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
