Muslim terrorists have abducted more than 120 children since January, forcing them into labor, marriage or combat. Of those, only six have been released.
Sadly, an estimated 53% of Mozambique’s girls are married by age 18, making the East African country one of the highest ranking in the world for child marriages.
“Released hostages are seen as ‘untrustworthy’, as liable to return to the terror group, or they are feared as a lightening-rod likely to draw fresh attacks upon the community. Girls are viewed as contaminated or unworthy of marriage,” wrote Open Doors UK on July 4.
The Islamic State (IS) group al-Shabaab has terrorized Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique since 2017, indiscriminately torturing, raping, killing and beheading more than 6,000 people, many of those Christians and children. Sadly, Mozambique’s military warring with al-Shabaab has also engaged in horrific acts against civilians.
Prayer matters. Here at the Prayer Wall, we prayed for a missionary pilot and two South African Christians who were arrested and imprisoned on false charges in 2022, when they attempted to take needed medicines and supplies to Christian orphanages in Cabo Delgado. A few months ago, praise God, the charges were dropped, and Ryan Koher and his family have returned to their work in Mozambique.
Loving Father, please rescue these children from the hands of ruthless terrorists. Be a Shield around their hearts and minds and keep them from harm. Meet them in powerful ways, even in the midst of oppression and torture, and show them Your way of salvation. Don’t let any of Satan’s plans for them prevail, but make the way for them to know the Truth who sets them free. Open the way quickly for their escape, give them wisdom to skirt the enemy and slip away undetected, and bring them safely home to their families. Visit every Muslim terrorist in their dreams and convict them of their horrific crimes. Show them the way to salvation through Jesus and give them courage to leave their false religion of violence, rape and murder, and turn to You. Every time they reach for a child to do evil, open their eyes to see Your angels guarding that child, and bring them to their knees in fear of the Lord and surrender to You. Pour Your love out on these children, and raise up an army to bravely steal them back from the enemy. Please shield every child all throughout Mozambique from abduction and other harm. Bring Christians around them to raise them up in Your Word and lead them to faith in Jesus. Please, Father, quickly bring an end to this war, and bring every violent offender to justice. Raise up the people of Mozambique to love You with all their hearts and share Your love so boldly among the lost, especially Muslims, with miracles and signs and wonders by Your hand, that thousands will drop their weapons and choose Jesus as Savior. Please also cover every missionary with Your wings and keep them safe as they do Your work. Use them mightily for Your glory to help train up pastors, evangelists, Christian teachers, politicians and other influencers who will lead the nation to times of peace and a Great Awakening to You. Provide for all the needs of every displaced Christian and plant vibrant churches that worship You with all their hearts and teach Truth everywhere they go. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
