Floods Around the World

SOUTH AFRICA: The death toll from June floods and snow in Eastern Cape province has risen to 101, with two children still missing and more than 4,000 people displaced.

CHINA: Tens of thousands fled their homes during heavy rain in Hunan province. Last week in neighboring Guizhou province, six died from Tuesday’s floods in Congjiang and Rongjiang, which then spread to Guangxi province. Nearly 81,000 people were evacuated. On Saturday, heavy rain re-submerged Congjiang and Rongjiang.

PAKISTAN: At least 46 have died in flash floods over the past week, including 22 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 13 in Punjab, seven in Sindh and four in Balochistan.

INDIA: At least 34 have died in heavy rains, floods and landslides in the northeast. Yesterday, rescues began for more than 1,000 tourists in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, and 500 people in Meghalaya state.

AFGHANISTAN: Flash floods in Maidan Wardak and Logar provinces on Sunday killed four and washed away homes and farmlands.

BANGLADESH: Four family members died in a landslide in Sylhet district.

VENEZUELA: Thousands have evacuated areas of Venezuela due to heavy rainfall, landslides and widespread flooding in five states over the past few days. Dozens of bridges collapsed, farms were submerged and more than 150 homes were destroyed.

THAILAND: Thursdays flash floods overwhelmed the northern province of Chiang Rai, invading homes and submerging farmland and orchards.

Lord, please have mercy. Comfort those who mourn, heal the wounded and rescue those who are trapped. When they cry out to You, hear them, O God, and answer them. So many people have died already without the chance to know You. They will spend eternity now apart from You. And so many more are yet in danger of dying. Please, Jesus, make Yourself known now to every person in South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Venezuela, China, Thailand, Bangladesh, India and every country suffering from floods. Meet them in their dreams, talk to them throughout the day. Part the way for Christians to help with rescues, aid, counseling, medical needs, shelter and provisions. Give Christian aid workers favor with authorities, and use them to share Your good news widely. Use these terrible tragedies to bring about a movement of Your Spirit with thousands coming to faith in each of these countries. Move displaced people into areas where Christians can take them in and care for them, showing them Your love and speaking to them the truth about Christ. So many of these, especially in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and China, have been cut off from the gospel. They live in fear daily, devoted to religion or ideology that cannot save them. Please, Father, step in and save them. Don’t let even one more person die without the chance to know You and experience the joy of salvation and eternal life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
