At least 25 Christians died and about 63 were wounded when a suicide bomber opened fire on worshippers at a church in Damascus Sunday, and then detonated himself.
About 350-400 Christians were in attendance at Mar Elyas Greek Orthodox Church in Dwelia neighborhood at the time, and several children were among the victims. The terrorist is believed to be from Islamic State, although no claim has officially been made. (June 22, International Christian Concern, Persecution.org)
“We Christians love the enemy before the ally. We forgive and we love,” said one lady at the church, struggling to hold back her tears. “Why do they harm us? Is it because we are a religion of love?”

Lord, please wrap Your arms around families who are in shock and grieving right now. Heal those who have been injured. Strengthen and heal the minds of all those who have been traumatized. Empower them to forgive and to rise up and love the lost Muslims all around them. Please have mercy on the church in Syria. Masses of Christians have been martyred for their faith through the years, even though Damascus was once a hub of Christianity in the region. We ask You for a Great Awakening all across Syria and beyond. Lift the veil from the eyes of the lost so they will see You as You truly are. Show Yourself strong on behalf of the persecuted and abandoned. Protect the innocent. Shield those who seek You or already believe in You. Perform signs and wonders, miracles and healings as powerful demonstrations of Your love, turning all eyes to You. Get up in the face of every terrorist and confront them with Truth. Bring them to their knees before You in fear of the Lord, so they lay down their weapons, repent of atrocities committed, and choose You as Savior. Give Christians courage and Your Spirit’s empowering to share Your Good News with those who are hungry for You in a way they can easily understand, and increase that hunger all throughout the nation and among refugees in other nations, drawing thousands of lost Syrians to find true refuge in the arms of the One True King and Savior. Take what the enemy has meant for evil and turn it around into a mighty movement of Muslims coming to faith in Christ. Awaken the lost to Your love, O God. Awaken all Syrians to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
