Israel’s war with Hamas has leveled much of Gaza and left Palestinians suffering from acute trauma and food insecurity. About 90 truckloads of humanitarian aid entered the Strip Wednesday night, but it may still be too late for the one in five Palestinians facing starvation.
“People are collapsing in the streets, unable to walk, speak, or stand because of the severe hunger and trauma they’ve endured,” reported Hanna Massad, former pastor of Gaza Baptist Church and founder of Christian Mission to Gaza (May 20 letter).
“Yet, even amid devastation, we continue to see God’s mercy through small, but powerful acts of compassion. At the beginning of the month, we were able to distribute 3,000 hot meals to displaced families in the south, central, and north of Gaza. Every meal is a reminder that they are not forgotten.”
“Many of them hadn’t cooked in days. There was nothing to cook, no gas, and even firewood had become unaffordable,” said a CM2G field partner distributing food in central Gaza. “We delivered two meals per tent to reach everyone…. One man (with) nine children … couldn’t stop thanking us, and especially the church, for not forgetting them.”
In March and April, CM2G and Gaza Baptist Church also served thousands of hot meals, and even provided training for Gaza residents seeking to help people heal from trauma. In the neighborhood where Pastor Hanna grew up, Christians provided clean drinking water. “It is a small but powerful expression of Christ’s love and a reminder that the Christian presence is still here, still caring,” Hanna wrote in April. In fact, several Muslims even expressed interest in visiting the church.
A Palestinian whose family was fed this month expressed, “With all my heart, I thank the Gaza Baptist Church for remaining a warm and faithful embrace for the Palestinian people in the most difficult of times. When our homes were empty of food, the church arrived.”
Today’s prayer was written by a believer in Gaza:
O God, I pray that this war will stop, that the killing and suffering will cease…. Bring peace to Gaza and to the entire world. You can do that. With a word from You, all this will cease.
I pray for the salvation of souls in Gaza, so that they may know the true light and true peace in the person of Your Son, the Lord Jesus.
Be a help to the displaced and those who lack the necessities of life…. Provide for (their) needs, including water, food, tents and all the necessities of life, (and for) children’s needs, such as clothing, milk and toys…. Meet every need.
Comfort the hearts of those who have lost loved ones in this war. Grant them patience in the pain of separation.
Bless every work we do, and enable people to seek the grace of the Lord Jesus in their lives.
In the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.
