About 60 villagers who practice tribal religion in India’s Durandarbha village, Chhattisgarh state, gathered around 11 Christian families on April 24, beating them with thick wooden sticks and demanding they renounce Christ. (May 13, Morning Star News)
“We were dying in our sickness, and you did not bother about how we lived,” one of the Christians replied. “Now that Jesus has healed us and we are living a healthy life, our health and peaceful lives bother you, and you come to question our faith.”
But their assailants beat them all the more ruthlessly, even women, children and the elderly. They raided the Christians’ homes, burning their Bibles, bank documents, ID cards and other important papers, and then chased them from the village. “Leave Jesus Christ and only then enter the village,” their pursuers insisted.
The Christians fled into the forest and hills. About 45 now shelter several miles away in a leaky church made of logs and hay . They reported the mass assault to the police, but no arrests have been made.
A few days earlier, on April 12 in nearby Karigundam, around 2,000 villagers gathered from eight villages to force 15 Christian families to renounce their faith.
Eight of the families refused, while seven gave in out of fear of losing their homes and livelihoods. The eight were forced to flee. But following social media posts covering the event, police confronted the village leaders and demanded they return the believers’ belongings.
India ranks among the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, largely due to Hindu nationalism. Mobs often surround Christians to beat or kill them, sometimes with approval of police.
Lord, please comfort these Christians, heal those who are wounded, provide for all their needs, and shield them from further harm. Please make the way for each of the families in the leaky shelter to keep dry and free from sickness. Open the way for their safe return to their homes, or provide for them new homes in a safe location. Show Your mercy to these who stood strong in their faith, and even to those who did not. Draw them back to Yourself, show them Your forgiveness, and give every Christian grace and love to forgive their persecutors in such an open way the villagers will see their love and faith, forsake their worship of spirits and idols, and choose to follow the One True God through faith in Jesus. Break the chains that bind unbelievers in this region and all throughout India to false religion and demons of violence. Grip them with remorse, transform their hearts and save them. Make them into passionate followers of Christ who lead thousands to faith in You, planting churches all across the land. Shine Your light in the darkness so brightly, every follower of tribal religion, every Hindu, every Muslim, every unbeliever in India will hunger and thirst for Truth. For each Christian who is persecuted or martyred, bring 1,000 lost Indians to faith in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
