Christians in Uganda Persecuted, Martyred

Last week, we shared with you how God had answered our prayers during Ramadan, and many Muslims came to faith in Uganda, but several Christians were also murdered.

Following are more reports of persecution in Uganda. Let’s continue to pray for these situations. Pray for protection and healing for Christians and seekers who survived, comfort for the families of those who died, and salvation for Muslim persecutors.

Islamic extremists attacked evangelist Robert “Mulokole” Kasozi and Christians Alice Nanduja, James Bazanya and Frank Biribawa after they led a 75-year-old Muslim widow, Hasifa, to Christ at an open-air preaching event in Kiwanga village February 15. Passersby rescued them and all four survived, praise God, although Mulokole suffered deep knife wounds. (Morning Star News, February 25)

When Christians shared the gospel with a Muslim family, Kaiga Muhammad, his wife Sawuya Kaiga and their adult son, Swagga Amuza Kaiga, chose to follow Christ. Swagga suffered with malaria, but God miraculously healed him that day. Because Kaiga was a mosque leader, they chose to keep their conversion secret for fear of attacks. But about two weeks later, another Muslim leader, Wangule Abudu, saw Kaiga leave a church service. He demanded he renounce his faith, but Kaiga would not. The day after Christmas last year, Muslim extremists set their house in Kaliro town on fire, burning the family to death. Wangule and another Muslim, Ismail Njagi were arrested for murder and arsen. (MSN, January 6)

James Mukenye Habiibu, who chose to leave Islam and follow Christ together with his wife in 2022, received death threats from Muslim family members soon after, so they fled to another district. But last fall, they returned to Bulangira and received more death threats. On December 16, James left for a gospel outreach with another Christian, and Swaibu, Jafari and other Muslim extremists attacked and murdered him. James was the father of three children, ages 2, 4 and 7. (MSN, December 26)

Last October, Wanjala Hamidu, a Muslim teacher at an Islamic school in Nankoma, was beaten to death by his brothers just two weeks after he chose to follow Christ. Wanjala attended a Christian evangelistic event in Bulange with his brother, Wulasiyo Swamadu. But when he remained afterward for more Christian teaching, Wulasiyo told his brothers. On October 21, four of his brothers, led by Hiire Isifu and Hawumba Jamada, took him from his school back to his home village of Masita and demanded he renounce Christ, but he would not. So they beat him to death, with his distraught mother looking on. (MSN, November 20, 2024)

Three days into a a six-day gospel event, where 18 Muslims chose to follow Christ, Islamic extremists surrounded evangelist Emmanuel Dikusooka and another church member, Jack Mbulante. Armed with pangas (long Somali swords), sticks and iron bars, the six assailants threw their Bibles and other Christian Books into the river and demanded they renounce their faith in Jesus. Jack jumped into the river and swam for help, but by the time Christians arrived to rescue Emmanuel, the father of three (ages 4-9), was already dead. (MSN, November 11, 2024)

After leading three Muslims to faith, Pastor Weere Mukisa, along with his wife and two daughters, ages 7 and 4, were burned to death by Muslim extremists in Kibale village on October 13, 2024.

In Nankoma last October, Hidaaya Nabafa‘s Muslim husband, Juma Nsibambi, beat her and burned her with acid after finding out she had chosen to follow Jesus. Neighbors took her to the hospital, where she received weeks of treatment for severe wounds. Their children are ages 7, 5 and 3. (MSN, October 25, 2024)

Last fall, two evangelists, Robertson Eriot and Kefa Mukisa, visited homes outside of Busia town, and stopped at the compound where and Islamic leader, Sheikh Kalimu, lived to share the gospel with his watchman. Sheikh overheard the conversation and ordered the Muslims he had been meeting with to attack the Christians. Kefa escaped, but Robertson suffered severe wounds, including deep head injuries and bone fractures. He and his wife have six children, ages 7-19. (MSN, September 25, 2024)

“Uganda’s constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to propagate one’s faith and convert from one faith to another.” Nearly 85 percent of Uganda is considered Christian. Only 12% follows Islam. Pray for a Great Awakening to Christ’s love all throughout Uganda, but especially in eastern regions with high concentrations of Muslims.

Lord, we thank You for guarding the lives of Robert, Alice, James, Frank, Hasifa, Jack, Hidaaya, Robertson, Kefa, and other Christians who shared Your love with Muslims. Please heal their wounds and any trauma they continue to experience. Comfort their loved ones and families, as well as the families of Kaiga, Sawuya, Swagga, James, Wanjala, and the Mukisas. Chase out fear with Your perfect love, and give them grace to forgive. Please be a Shield of protection around every Christian in Uganda. Use them as bold witnesses to bring thousands to faith. Ground Your church in truth and love and fill every believer with such joy and peace that their neighbors, families and even their persecutors will long to know You as Savior.

We ask You, merciful Father, for the salvation of Wangule, Ismail, Swaibu, Jafari, Wulasiyo, Hiire, Hawumba, Juma, Sheikh, and the other Muslims involved in attacks against Christians. Give them vivid dreams and visions pointing to Jesus as the only Way, Truth and Life. Pursue them with such power encounters, they will repent lay down their false god of violence and murder, and worship You alone, O God of Love. We ask the same for every Islamic extremist and unbeliever in Uganda. Rise up and show Yourself strong. Break the chains that bind them to satan’s purposes and save them. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are. Whenever they move to attack a Christian, open their eyes to see Your angels standing guard, and fill them with such fear of the Lord, they drop their weapons and fall to their knees in surrender to You alone.

Pray for Christians in Uganda, who continue to endure horrific attacks by Muslim terrorists. Join with other believers all across the world to pray for our nations and the whole world at the Prayer Wall, PrayerWall.pw. Let’s push back the darkness together as one, and pray forth God’s purposes in these trying times. “For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:1 rsv
