Before we step into our Saturday prayer theme for Holy Week, let’s pray for God’s comfort for those mourning the deaths of two Florida State University students on Thursday. Six people were injured in the mass shooting, as well as the shooter, Phoenix Ikner.
Lord, in the midst of this terrible tragedy, we ask You to touch every heart and turn all eyes to You. Strengthen believers in their faith and use them to reach out in love to comfort those who mourn or feel afraid. Give every heart a hunger for You through this reminder of the brevity of life on this earth, and pull them up into Your arms to be saved. Show them Your way of salvation and set them free with Your truth. Break the chains that bind Phoenix to demons, and heal the wounds in his heart, mind and body. Tear down every lie with Your truth. Drive him to his knees with the burden of his sin until he repents and chooses to believe in You. Pour out Your love over him and save him.
Today, as we think on Christ’s obedience to Father, even unto death, take a moment to ask the Lord, “What have You asked me to do that I haven’t done yet? Or what have You asked me to stop doing that I have continued in? What has kept me from obedience?
Lord Jesus, what You ask of me is nowhere near the level of sacrifice You endured when You died on the cross for my sins. And yet, so many times I don’t do what You ask of me because I think I can’t, or that I don’t have that gift or that I’m not good enough. More often, I don’t obey because I just don’t want to. Please forgive me. Teach me to be humble like Christ. To love You so deeply all I want to do is obey. To love others so deeply I will do what it takes for them to know the good news of salvation You offer them. Even today, Lord, show me someone who needs You, so I can reach out and minister to them like You would. Teach me how to die to myself so I can live for You. I want to love as You first loved me. Forgive me of my sin. Set me free from my selfish strongholds. Transform my heart and mind. For only in You will I find true joy, peace and meaning in life. Empower me to rise up and do the good works You’ve prepared for me, not in my own power but as one with You. In Your name. Amen.
