Let’s continue to pray for the many displaced people in Myanmar and surrounding areas, after the earthquake and as military strikes continue. Lord, please hold back the enemy. Block the violence. Stop the war. Rescue those who are trapped. Comfort those who mourn. Get help to those in need. Make the way for Christians to get into affected areas, save lives and bring Your message of hope and salvation. Perform signs and miracles of rescue, healing and salvation, so that all eyes turn to You. Pour out Your love over Myanmar, Thailand and other surrounding areas affected by the earthquake. Let every heart see You as You truly are and be saved.
As we pray for Myanmar and its millions who are displaced both in-country and abroad, here’s a story of encouragement about a refugee from tragic circumstances in Africa who found new life:
Hamadi witnessed the murder of his brothers and his father at the hands of jihadists in their African village. When a jihadist leveled the gun at him, his mother intervened.
“Escape, my son,” she yelled. “Escape and at least one of my sons will live.” Hamadi ran. As he fled, he heard the shot that killed his mother.
Hamadi survived for six months in a bordering country until he was able to board a boat bound for Europe. But 90 people crowded into a vessel meant to hold no more than 15, and after only one day at sea, the boat sank, killing dozens of people, including women and children.
Somehow, Hamadi survived and, when he reached shore, found his way to a refugee ministry. But he was tormented with guilt that he had lived when so many others had died, and he would barely look at the ministry workers. Despite his reluctance to engage with anyone, one man became his friend and helped him submit the necessary legal documents, get medical aid, and train for a new job.
“Why do you do this with me, why do you help me and show so much love for me?” Hamadi asked his new friend. The ministry worker saw Hamadi’s question as an opportunity to share the gospel. He told Hamadi that, like his mother, Jesus paid the price for his freedom, only Jesus’ sacrifice was paid on the cross for eternal freedom.
The Holy Spirit moved in Hamadi’s heart and he wept. Shortly after, he accepted Jesus as his Savior and was baptized. Now, he is training to become a leader among other refugees from his country.

Merciful God, we mourn the horrific tragedies surrounding Hamadi’s journey to You, but praise You for saving His life and bringing into his path Christians who love him and led him to the Truth who set him free. Grow him strong in You, now, Lord — in love, in faith, in wisdom, in knowledge and understanding of the Word, and in every gift of the Spirit. Use him to lead many more lost to faith in You. Father God, so many millions in certain countries in Africa have yet to hear the good news of salvation. They’ve been taught only the violence and hatred of Islam. Woo them to Yourself. Demonstrate to them Your love, as You did to Hamadi. Give them such a hunger for You they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Protect them and their families on their journey to freedom. Make a way for every tribe, family and village to hear Your good news in a way they can easily understand and receive You as Lord and Savior. Please meet every jihadist in their dreams and point them to Jesus. Give them such powerful encounters with You that they fall to their knees in fear of the Lord and surrender their lives to You. Open their eyes to see You as You truly are and give them courage to surrender all to You, like Paul did on the road to Damascus. Every time extremists seek to persecute the innocent, open their eyes to see Your angel armies protecting the weak and their ears to hear Your voice calling them to repentance. And save them, O God, by Your merciful hand. Bring to justice those who refuse to turn to You. Whatever the enemy has meant for evil, turn around for great good. Awaken every jihadist, every refugee, every heart in Africa and beyond to Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
