30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening
Before we head into our prayers for Africa this week, let’s lift up families recovering from wildfires in Japan, cyclone Alfred in eastern Australia, and especially the massacre of more than 1,300 Muslim Alawites in Syria over the past few days. Lord, awaken every heart to Your love. In the midst of these tragedies, as people cry out to You, answer them in personal and powerful ways and save them.
Verses for contemplation: Matthew 22:37-40
Africa plays a large part in biblical history, including the 430 years God’s people spent as slaves in Egypt (See Exodus 12:40-41). And in Acts 8, we see the gospel of Jesus shared with an Ethiopian.
Today, brutal attacks by Muslim extremists threaten Christians in most of Africa, not only in the 18 nations with a Muslim majority, but also in many of the 28 mainly Christian nations. In fact, about 80-90% of believers martyred worldwide each year die in Nigeria, where nearly 50% of the population is Christian.
In addition, horrific conflicts in countries like Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan have seen the deaths of many thousands, with millions displaced.

Pray God will
- Grow believers strong in faith, truth, hope and love.
- Guard them from persecution.
- Help them forgive their persecutors.
- Anoint them to powerfully share the Gospel.
- Give the lost a hunger for Him.
- Meet Muslim extremists in their dreams.
- Turn terrorists and all persecutors to Christ.
- Awaken Africa to His love.
Prayer starter:
Lord of the Harvest, we thank You for the many Christians throughout Africa who faithfully love and serve You even in the midst of brutal persecution. Grow them strong in faith, steadfast in love, deep in understanding of Scripture and bold in sharing the Gospel. Flow Your love through them as they speak truth, so that everyone who hears will be moved to faith, including persecutors. Give Christians courage to forgive those who sin against them. May the lost see Your hand upon them and join churches rather than attacking them, choosing Life rather than the path to death Islam and tribal religions tread. Tear down every barrier that stands in the way of the lost hearing the Good News. For each of the thousands of Christians martyred for their faith in this region, spread Your Word all the more abundantly. Spark church planting movements with signs, miracles, wonders, dreams and visions so that many millions will call upon the name of the Lord and be saved. Awaken all of Africa to her true calling: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Raise up pastors, evangelists, youth leaders, counselors, government workers, and influencers from all walks of life to shine Your love from shore to shore and call every lost person from out of the darkness into Your glorious Kingdom of Light.
Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 1-30, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him!
Lord, about 446 million Muslims live in Africa, many of those extremists guilty of violent crimes against Christians. Even now, as they fast for Ramadan, some are planning their next attack. Step in, O God, and foil those plans. Give them such powerful encounters with You they are moved to repentance, choosing to love and serve the very One they have persecuted. Surround Christians with angel armies so visible to human eyes, attackers will drop their weapons in fear of the Lord and be saved. Flow through Christians’ prayers, forgiveness, kindness and love to draw extremists to You. Lift the veil from their eyes so they will see You as You truly are and believe in You.
Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:
Search the internet to choose recipes from African countries. Have your children research issues Africa has faced in the past and in the present, missionaries to that continent, barriers to the Gospel, etc., and then invite them to share their findings before you pray together for Africa. Menu suggestions: maharagwe (bean soup), bariis iskukaris (spiced Somali rice), Malawian sweet potato soup, malva pudding (South Africa)
You can also go to Joshua Project to discover unreached peoples, and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs to see where and how Christians are persecuted.
If you would like to plan ahead for international meals, see the “Dinner and a Prayer” section at the bottom of our 30 Days page or in the back of your 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening, Vol 2 book.
