Day 9: Northern Europe

30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening

Verse for contemplation: Jeremiah 29:11

During the Viking Age in the 9th century, as Norsemen traveled, traded and plundered other lands, they encountered Christian communities. But only after several influential chieftains chose baptism did Christianity take hold in Scandinavia. Hermits from Ireland who settled in Iceland were the first to take Christianity there, followed by Norse settlers a century later. Today, the majority of Northern Europeans see themselves as Christian.

Prayer points to consider:

• Unreached people groups in this region are mostly Muslim, but also include Buddhists, Hindus (Finland, Iceland) and Jews (Norway).
• Refugee integration, mostly from Syria (260,000), but also Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia and other Muslim countries has had a huge impact on Northern Europe.
• Because of harsh weather conditions and terrain, as well as cultural and other barriers, some Northern Europeans feel isolated without a strong Christian community where they can worship and grow in their faith.

Prayer starter:

Lord, even though the majority of those living in Northern Europe claim Christianity, there are still so many thousands who have yet to hear Your good news. Most are Muslim immigrants, but also Hindu, Buddhist, and even a few Jews. Please mobilize churches and missionaries with a heart for the lost to press across language and cultural barriers and share Your love. Give every person all throughout Northern Europe a deep, deep hunger for You. For those who are backslidden, or who think they are Christian but still have not chosen You as Savior and Lord, remind them of the truth they have heard and draw them back to You. For the lost, make them so hungry they will seek You with all their heart and find You. If they live in isolated areas, move them into neighborhoods where loving Christians live, connect them with believers on the internet, send Christians to them in person to show them Your love and get them involved in contagiously loving churches that teach Your Word with power. Make a way for every person in Northern Europe to respond to Your invitation of salvation. Light every Christian on fire with passion for Your name. Make them bold witnesses for You. Mend marriages. Heal the sick. Provide for those in need. Bring love, peace and joy back to families. Anoint pastors, leaders and evangelists to preach Your Word with power. Raise up young people sold out to You who will walk away from temptation and into Your arms, bringing hundreds with them and sparking a revival that spreads like wildfire all across Europe and beyond. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Parallel Prayer: Our 30 Days of Prayer for Global Awakening coincides with Ramadan. March 1-30, Muslims throughout the world are fasting and seeking God right now. Let’s pray they find Him! 

Lord, be near to Muslims in Northern Europe right now. Let them feel You close and know Your arms are opened wide to them. Give them a yearning for more than what they’ve experienced and a hunger to seek out Truth. Bring loving Christian friends to them to answer their questions about Jesus. Break down every barrier, and step into their space to show them the love of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Dinner and a Prayer: Each day during these 30 days, we will share with you ideas for special family prayer times, including a suggested menu to go with that day’s prayer theme. Today’s suggestions:

Search the internet to choose recipes to cook for dinner from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and/or Sweden. Invite your children to research these countries and share their findings with the family at dinner. Talk together about barriers and challenges facing the peoples of Northern Europe. Then pray together as a family. Menu suggestions: Swedish meatballs, Norwegian potato lefse, Danish red cabbage, Finnish blueberry pie
