Soon after Hamas raided Israel on October 7, 2023, the Houthis raided the Red Sea.
In opposition to Israel’s campaign against Hamas, these terrorists from Yemen launched missile and drone attacks on more than 100 merchant vessels in international waters, sinking two, seizing one and killing four sailors.
With the motto, “death to Israel” and “a curse upon the Jews,” they claim to target ships linked to Israel, the US and the UK, countries which have shot down the majority of those missiles and attacked key Houthi sites in Yemen in response to terrorist attacks.
On November 19, 2023, armed Houthis dropped from a helicopter onto the Galaxy Leader, a Bahamas-flagged, Japanese-operated vehicles carrier owned by a British company, which is partially owned by an Israeli businessman. They seized the vessel, taking captive its international crew of 17 Filipinos, 3 Ukrainians, 2 Mexicans, 2 Bulgarians, and 1 Romanian.
This week, in support of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Houthis released all 25 crew members after 429 days in captivity.
Islamic extremists, the Houthis number about 200,000 and are 100% unreached with the gospel of Christ. Backed by Iran, they are key players in the current Yemen civil war, which began in 2014 against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, but they also war against other Muslim groups. Their name comes from the Zaidi Muslim religious leader Hussein al-Houthi, who opposed Yemen’s president in the 1990s, but their official name, Ansar Allah, means “Supporters of God.”
Lord, thank You for this answer to prayer, that those who were held captive are now free. Please bring loving Christians to them to share Your good news and help them heal from the trauma they have experienced. And save them, Lord. Lovingly meet them and their families in powerful ways, pouring Your love over out over them and healing their minds and hearts, as You draw them up into Your arms to know the One this life is for. As Hamas has used Gazans for human shields, as Hezbollah has cared not for the Lebanese citizens caught up in their war, and as Houthis have abused and killed many thousands of Yemeni men, women and children, we ask You, Lord, to burn within every Muslim heart all across the Middle East a yearning for more than violence, lust and evil. Give them a hunger for Love so strong they will search for Truth with all their hearts and find Jesus. Meet them in their dreams. Drive them into Your arms. Lift the veil from their eyes and show them who You truly are, that You are the One this life is for, You LOVE them and You are GOOD. Counter every evil attack, whether against Israelis, Muslims or some other country, with Your gospel penetrating hearts once hardened to Truth. Soften those hearts, remove the plaster from their eyes, and show them the way to salvation. Bring the good news to them in such clear and inviting ways, even (and especially) terrorists will not be able to resist You. May thousands turn away from Islam, meet the Prince of Peace and give their hearts to serve the God who is Love. Awaken every Houthi terrorist. Invade their space. Get up in their face. Make them see Your angels fighting against them and fall to their knees in fear and trembling. Press upon the breaking point of every Muslim heart, until at last they see You are the One they were created for, that You made them for love, not destruction; to build up, not tear down; to help, not dismember; to bless, not abuse and kill. Open their ears to hear Your voice calling them to Christ. And save them, O Lord. Bring Christians into their path filled with joy and peace, who will show them Love like they’ve never known before. And change their hearts forever, Lord. May they die to satan’s purposes and come alive to Your leading.
